Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo is Working to Make Super Mario Run as Popular as Pokémon GO

Mario Run will never be as big as Pokemon Go.

Pokemon Go was new and fresh. Mario Run is just looks like another Run game with Mario skin and a bit of creative twist.

Plus Pokemon Go was somewhat of a dream come true 20years in the making.

Mario is more popular than Pokémon, Mario has many succesful spin-offs while Pokémon spin-off games sell comparatively little. There are 3 Mario games on the 3DS alone that sold over 10 million. Super Mario Run won't be nearly as frontloaded as Pokémon Go was though, but it will have longer legs. It also won't become a cultural phenomenon because "endless" runners have been done many times before and while Pokémon Go's concept wasn't new Pokémon did make it mainstream.

When all is said and done there will be 3 Pokemon games on the 3DS alone that sold over 10 million as well. Likely the top 2 will both be Pokemon games too! Mario may have been in more games, but at the end of the day there`s going to be just as many Pokemon games in the 3DS` top 10 and more in its top 5 than there are Mario.

Edit: Oh and you mention successful spin offs? Well what about outside of gaming? The most successful movie franchise? Pokemon! Most successful anime series? Pokemon! Most successful trading card game? Pokemon! Which one sells the most merchandise? Well I don`t know for sure but considering there are literally stores dedicated to selling nothing but Pokemon merchandise and nothing similar for Mario I think it`s safe to assume Pokemon wins there too.

The most sucessful movie franchise would be Resident Evil, not Pokemon. I don't know about your other points, though.

I think that the social aspect of Pokemon Go makes it really hard to achieve. I still think that Mario Run will be sucessful, but not in Pokemon Go level.

You forget about Super Mario Maker that is coming to the 3DS. And now take a look at the Wii U:

- Mario Kart 8: 8 million

- New Super Mario Bros. U: 5.45 million

- Super Mario 3D World: 5.19 million

- Super Mario Maker: 3.73 million

- New Super Luigi U: 2.74 million

- Mario Party 10: 1.94 million

Compare this to Pokémon:

- Pokken Tournament: 0.93 million

We're talking games here, so movies, anime and merchandise doesn't really matter. 3DS also has games like Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon that were highly succesful.

When it comes to gaming Pokémon has nothing on Mario.

It can do well, just depends on how much it costs to get the full game

The premise of Pokemon Go is there since that is what Pokemon fans always wanted to do, to catch pokemon in the real world

Mario Run, on the other hand isn't as eye catching, but no doubt it will do well

Yeah Mario with lots of games outsold Pokemon with only 1 spinoff game in a genre that`s fast becoming niche... what did you really expect?

And no, we`re not talking games here. We`re talking popularity and everything else does play a huge role in popularity. There`s more people that know and care about Pokemon than Mario, pretty obvious when the only way to access any Mario content is through a Nintendo console but for Pokemon there`s no need for a Nintendo console whatsoever due to all the other mediums Pokemon is present in. And of course there`s the numerous Pokemon rip offs as well. There`s just more nostalgia over the Pokemon brand than there is Mario.

We can argue till the cows come home, but also consider this. Mario was chosen with a few other Japanese icons to appear in the closing ceremonies of one of, if not the, biggest sporting events in the world to great reception. To help with the hand off for the Olympics coming to Tokyo is a big honor and with Nintendo's theme park on the horizon, it'll be huge for the brand.

New Super Mario Bros DS and New Super Mario bros Wii sold the same as Pokemon red/blue, most succesful pokemon ever.

Both games were heavily heavily bundled aswell.  Pokemon without a doubt is more popular.

Pokemon usually has two games though. Mario can sell that with only one game.

I don't remember New Super Mario Bros for DS being heavily bundled, unless you're taking about late into the DS' life.
