Edit: Oh and you mention successful spin offs? Well what about outside of gaming? The most successful movie franchise? Pokemon! Most successful anime series? Pokemon! Most successful trading card game? Pokemon! Which one sells the most merchandise? Well I don`t know for sure but considering there are literally stores dedicated to selling nothing but Pokemon merchandise and nothing similar for Mario I think it`s safe to assume Pokemon wins there too.

You forget about Super Mario Maker that is coming to the 3DS. And now take a look at the Wii U:

- Mario Kart 8: 8 million

- New Super Mario Bros. U: 5.45 million

- Super Mario 3D World: 5.19 million

- Super Mario Maker: 3.73 million

- New Super Luigi U: 2.74 million

- Mario Party 10: 1.94 million

Compare this to Pokémon:

- Pokken Tournament: 0.93 million

We're talking games here, so movies, anime and merchandise doesn't really matter. 3DS also has games like Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon that were highly succesful.

When it comes to gaming Pokémon has nothing on Mario.
