Yeah Mario with lots of games outsold Pokemon with only 1 spinoff game in a genre that`s fast becoming niche... what did you really expect? And no, we`re not talking games here. We`re talking popularity and everything else does play a huge role in popularity. There`s more people that know and care about Pokemon than Mario, pretty obvious when the only way to access any Mario content is through a Nintendo console but for Pokemon there`s no need for a Nintendo console whatsoever due to all the other mediums Pokemon is present in. And of course there`s the numerous Pokemon rip offs as well. There`s just more nostalgia over the Pokemon brand than there is Mario. |
We can argue till the cows come home, but also consider this. Mario was chosen with a few other Japanese icons to appear in the closing ceremonies of one of, if not the, biggest sporting events in the world to great reception. To help with the hand off for the Olympics coming to Tokyo is a big honor and with Nintendo's theme park on the horizon, it'll be huge for the brand.
