When all is said and done there will be 3 Pokemon games on the 3DS alone that sold over 10 million as well. Likely the top 2 will both be Pokemon games too! Mario may have been in more games, but at the end of the day there`s going to be just as many Pokemon games in the 3DS` top 10 and more in its top 5 than there are Mario.

Edit: Oh and you mention successful spin offs? Well what about outside of gaming? The most successful movie franchise? Pokemon! Most successful anime series? Pokemon! Most successful trading card game? Pokemon! Which one sells the most merchandise? Well I don`t know for sure but considering there are literally stores dedicated to selling nothing but Pokemon merchandise and nothing similar for Mario I think it`s safe to assume Pokemon wins there too.

The most sucessful movie franchise would be Resident Evil, not Pokemon. I don't know about your other points, though.
