Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo president essentially confirms Switch is a handheld

50% of Switch threads are people poorly paraphrasing and essentially telling lies. It's hilarious!

Around the Network

Anyone who watched that 3 minute trailer and is trying to convince themselves it's a console first is like a person who's watching a gang-bang sex scene going on for 15 minutes and still trying to convince themselves that what they're watching is a regular movie. No dude, you're watching a porno, hate to break it to you, lol. I don't care how nice the sets and costumes look.

Nintendo is trying to brand it initially more as a console because they have to sell the 3DS for a little while longer and because it likely is going to be more expensive ($250-$300) than the usual Nintendo portable so calling it a console makes the price point more palatable.

As the Switch price goes down and the 3DS fizzles out, Switch will replace the DS/3DS line and that will be the end of that.

Isn't this just semantics? You can hook it up to a TV and friends can hang out and play together in the living room. Or you can take it on the train or plane and play solo on a portable device.

It functions as both. Why do we need to label it?

yep thats what ive been saying, people need to stop arguing whether its a handheld or a console, its simply a gaming device that functions as both.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

It has a portable form factor, a built-in LCD screen, a portable battery, a mobile chip powering it, mobile RAM most likely being used.

It's a mobile system with a TV passthrough dock.

Sony could likely build a dock for the Vita that let it connect to the TV ... but the system is dead, so there's no point.

Besides really it's probably better that people look at it as a portable. People still like Nintendo portables/handhelds. Consoles ... not unless you have a controller gimmick that goes through the roof, and even that sank like the Titanic after a few years, really embarassing how it finished that generation. I understand for the time being (3DS, high price) that Nintendo wants it to be thought of as a console for now, but in a year or two they'll probably start to emphasize it as a portable first device that it actually is when they want more and more 3DS owners to "switch" over.

It is a portable, even if they call it a spaceship.

Yeah, pretty much this. I'm certainly looking at it as a handheld. If I get one it would be used exclusively as a handheld.

Nope, they have confirmed it as a primarily home console with portably, a "hybrid". People don't consider handhelds as consoles, so they're trying to make it seem like Nintendo is a handheld only company, so that they canmake it seem like Nintendo isn't as good as the other two.

I wouldn't call it a hybrid. It's a portable console. It's something new entirely.

A "new concept," if you will.

Alright....now Nintendo is scaring me. If they don't know how to talk about NX, I think this whole thing is going to be another mess.

Normal consumers aren't reading investor meetings lol.

Nintendo's proud to introduce our new Switch system, which is a new third pillar device* that is a home console **

* only if this flops, (if it doesn't see ya later DS and Game Boy brands)

** only until we're done clearing out our 3DS inventory and can drop the Switch price to $199.99.

That's not how I read that at all. He's saying that he's confident people won't mistake Switch for a 3DS successor, because it isn't. It's a portable home console. Nintendo's official statement on the matter is that it's a home gaming system. One that is portable.

Spot on.  this kids, is what happens when you pay attention and have a firm grasp on reality

Sorry, but you are both wrong.  You guys and many others in this thread are using marketing speak and confusing it with the bottom line.  When presidents of companies are talking to investors, the bullshit is mostly dropped and they use actual information.  This article and the actual company release say the same thing.  They use direct comparisons for sales to the 3ds and use them as projections.  It's not really much to speak to after that.  If they had made comparisons to WiiU sales or XB1/PS4 sales, you would know what they think there product category is.  But, they didn't do that.  THey comped it to the 3ds themselves.

That is reality kid...

It is near the end of the end....
