I think it's about once every few years? I usually only buy 1 or 2 consoles per generation, with some space in between them, so it's usually when the new generation comes around.

On average, once every 2.5 years?

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

I only buy consoles/handhelds when it has more than 10 games that i'm interested of. Which puts NS off that list currently

I buy consoles/handhelds whenever I feel like it. The longest gap I can think of between purchases was about 3 years.

Considering that I purchased a 3DS in 2012, Wii U in 2014, XBox One later in 2014, and I'm considering either a PS4P right now, or a NS in the spring, I guess I'm averaging less than two years between consoles.

* "day one" purchases.

*Edit* got another Gameboy in 1995, a GBA some time in 2002, and a Genesis some time in the middle of the sixth gen.

How can you remember all of those dates?  I've owned most of those systems myself (though not multiples of any except GBA), but I can't remember dates of purchase prior to 2010.

Not very often.

2002: PS2
2004: GameBoy SP
2006: PSP/DS
2009: PS3
2012: PSV
2013: Wii (to play xenoblade chronicles, gave it away, never finished it)
2014: PS4 (belong to my sister, she gave it to me and got a Destiny PS4 later on)

I hope to get a PS4Pro and PSVR sometime next year but will have to wait and see if it's worth.

A lot of them were purchased on Christmas, black Friday, within a week of their launch, income tax time (March, April), or the day a certain game launched (ie Tomb Raider for PS4 or Titanfall for Xbox One or Zelda for 3DS). If I can look up the game that made be buy the console, I know when I bought it!

Also, I take a lot of pics. I can look up dates for most  anything game related that I've bought since 2005. A few are just educated guesses.

2008 - PS3
2009 - PSP Go
2010 - 360
2010 - First gaming PC, pre-built (£700~)
2011 - GTX480 for 2010 PC (£350~)
2012 - 3DS
2013 - PS4
2013 - 3DSXL
2013 - Second gaming PC (£2000~)
2014 - PS3 Slim, bought because my PS3's disk drive stopped working.
2014 - PSVita
2016 - Third gaming PC (£3700~, including 4k screen)
2017 - Planning to buy a PS4Pro. I wasn't initially, but the Horizon: Zero Dawn 4k checkerboord fotage sold me.
2017 - Planning to re-build 2013 PC with a smaller case.

I'm pretty sure that's everything, and in the correct years (i almost forgot about the PSP Go :p). I've also included purchases i'm strongly expecting to make next year. I might end up getting a Switch too, but that's far from certain right now (its an interesting concept, but not one that meshes well with my gaming preference, so i'm waiting on more game announcements).

Woah, woah woah! What's this monstrosity?! Care to elaborate? *goes into nerd drool mode*

I buy hardware multiple times a year. Just this year I got a Wii U, a New 3DS, a new PC and I pre-ordered the PS4 Pro. I just like hardware, I actually collect that shit. =P
