The video game industry is a 30+ billion dollar industry, a video games store should not be in such dire straits

More than that actually, and the reason they are in dire straight is the boom of digitally, PC market share retail has pretty much disappeared and they cannot really gain mobile share at all due to it being digital as well. From that current video games consoles themselves are not as crazy to maintain growth alone for these shops, namely since they are started to creep on digital sales as well.

I have a Gamecube sitting around, boxed up, that I haven't played in years and probably never will play again. Wonder how much they'd give me for it? Probably jack and/or squat.

Last I saw,a couple of years ago,  they were selling them for $50.

"retro" is such an ugly overused word

Thing is, they mark up all trade-ins alot. If they're selling it for $50, they're probably only giving people $20 for the trade-in. I'm sure I could get more than that selling it on Craigslist or Ebay. Wish they had more fair trade-in values. If they'd give me $30 for the system + $5 for each of my Gamecube games I'd sell it to them just to save myself the hassle of selling it on Ebay or Craigslist.

I just checked the GameStop app. You'd get $30 credit or $24 cash.

People are going digital and there are just so many other choices to shop from. I buy games like crazy but I just realized that I hadn't set foot in GameStop since February--and that was just for a PSVR. I may never go there, again. It's just easier to order of download.

I hear you. About PSVR, I am 34 years old but I am getting phisically sick of longing for the thing. I saw Angry Joe reviews and the gadget blew my mind, looks like a lot of fun

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

Yeah, makes sense. I bought like 9 games in PSN last month, among them Dragon Age 3, Lego Hobbit, Batman Arkhan Kight, Driveclub... All of them, cost me, total, around  60 bucks, ALL OF THEM.

Here in Brazil a single one of these games go for 75 dollars at retail.

Gamecube counts as retro but Playstation 2 doesn't?

I don't see this at all about relavancy. This is due to NES Classic. Gamestop realizes that there is money to be made from retro consoles. If someone is willing to pay $60 for a limited NES Classic with a 3' cord and only 30 games, then they are willing to pay that for an actual NES fully restored with a single game and controller. Likely similar for other consoles, depending.

Its also very low risk for them. They'll give you a few bucks of trade-in credit that will instantly be profitable for them when you buy another console or used games. Only real risk is if they spend $20 refurbishing a NES and can't resell it.

Yep. I never even planned on going digital this gen but it's just way to convenienet.

I don't buy in my local gamestop anymore. Haven't bought a game since the ps4 launch. It's shocking the prices. €70 for a new title when I can get it €60 digital or $60 on my American account.

Can't see myself ever going back.
