Forums - Nintendo - Switch Prediction: Switch will have Pro version that includes dock with extra processing power

Well you also kinda need a connector to "upgrade" the unit.

If the portable Switch doesn't have a high speed data port, that would make such an idea problematic/impossible.

Though there is talk that the Switch has a USB Type C port on the bottom part of the unit.

I feel like since Ninendo's jumping in mid-way into this gen that they shouldn't do any hardware upgrades and just solely focus on games for the rest of this gen.

You know this is not far off what I think will happen, I personally think that the dock itself will stay the same but future gens will simply replace the tablet device that way owners of Switch can upgrade at cheaper with out the need to buy a dock and all.

If it's not a lot of power added, it's probably not even worth adding, considering the costs. I'm sure Nintendo sees that too, unless I'm wrong of course.

If it's enough power to boost the games from 720p to 1080p, I wouldn't say that's a lot of power, and I do think Nintendo could see that being worth it. 1080p is a marketable buzz word.

I'm not sure you realize how big of a leap it is to go from 720p to 1080p. 1080p has 2.25 times as many pixels as 720p. It requires a considerable amount of extra power, and would probably cost more than Nintendo wants.

A big leap tech wise for a end result that is negligibly better. Have high res textures, no pop ins, great AA and people will be hard pressed to tell the difference without side by side pictures. Hell, people thought BoTW was 1080p, Xeno X looks incredible for 720p. Essentially, I don't see the value in the price it'd likely cost.

I agree. I understand why resolution is pushed so hard, but personally I think it's a wasteful way to improve the graphics of a game after reaching a 'good enough' resolution. I think we're still at the point where we should be improving other things first and resolution later. I'd be perfectly fine with 720p if that mean otherwise better graphics/performance. I can understand the opposing view too, though - a crisper picture is better than a pixelated one.

Yeah, I mean Ninty is totally known for caring about cutting edge grfxx and copying whatever the hell Sony and Microsoft are doing right now!

All the leaks seem to have come to fruition.  The detachable controllers, the separate D-pad, the mobile/home console gimmick.  This leads me to think that maybe Nitnendo is hiding the rest of the patents/leaked information.  For instance the freeform screen and the supplemental computing device.

I predict that there will be an entry level Switch and a Pro version of switch.  Why the divide?  Simple, because PS4 and Xbone have upgrades coming and VR being more important in the future.  Nintendo seems to be catching up with the times and a sign of that is with the Switch trailer itself.  In the trailer there were no kids, just a bunch of millinials, they had games that were not available on Nintendo.  Nintendo listened to all the backlash of the Wii U and has seen the trend with modern consoles.  Their answer to the times is a entry level Switch and a Pro level Switch that will include a supplemental computing device.

Entry will be just the Switch console and the Pro version will include a supplemental computing device for the gamer who wants to more pixels in their games.  Because some gamers want it all, because some gamers will look at power as a selling point, because they can make these SCDs and cater to the ones that will fork over the cash.  Whatever reason, I really hope it happens because I want an option of a beefed up Nintendo Console along with the idea of taking it everywhere.

So, is this even technically possible with their technology?

That's the first thought  had when I saw the posts that said no extra power. I have been preaching in replies. Hope it's true

The reverse will be cheaper for Nintendo and the consumers. They can upgrade the screen part when Switch2 comes along. I hope from now on we start getting NS2 NS3 etc because to create a stronger brand you need a consistent name

I was just assuming a minor boost in power and then upscaling that to 1080p.  If the games already have high-quality assets, wouldn't that make the games look significantly better by default?  I wasn't talking about making a game run natively in 720 P to make it run natively in 1080 P. I admit I'm not familiar with the tech side of this stuff, but I definitely wasn't talking about what you're talking about.
