Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo: Switch dock only for charging and TV-out

Just as I assumed.

Chargeing, cables to hook up to TV, and maybe a cooling fan blowing air to cool the tablet when its docked.

That means the dock part is really cheap.

The Controll unit that you clip on those side controls from the tablet looks cheap too.

I hope this means the intire thing goes for 249$.

Not entirely sure of this tbh if we're to believe the devkit images the dock still has some uses as it seems to house 2GB RAM for some reason.

Okay...this isn't a home console no matter how much Nintendo wants to say it is; it's a strong handheld with tv-out capabilities.

That's a good thing.

That's good news. Why did you post it then?

I chuckled. Ya, this is good news.

Now I'm puzzled why Nintendo is saying it's a home console then, if it's portable and doesn't have any plus on playing home rather than being able to display it on a bigger screen...

Different controller options and (splitscreen) multiplayer for more than two players are a given. Motion control games are a possibility.

NIntendo's statement also has a business reason, they do not want to say that the 3DS will be obsolete soon, so close before the holiday season. That "first and foremost" will change to "Switch is a successor to both the Wii U and 3DS" in early 2017.

Does make PR awkward right now though. Also I'm not sure I believe Nintendo are willing to put all their eggs in one basket. Worried they will keep going with 3DS until they see the Switch's success or its failure in which case they make a new handheld.

Nintendo continued: "The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch. The main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen, which the two Joy-Con controllers can be attached to and detached from. The main function of the Nintendo Switch Dock is to provide an output to the TV, as well as charging and providing power to the system."

1080p in dock mode confirmed :P

you joke but you make me want to hold on to some hope.

This confirms that all the processing power must fit in the tablet, which in turns limit Switch's graphical capabilities. It's a bit disappointing but I think I can deal with it. At the very least it should ensure that the price can stay relatively low. That is, this practically confirms that it won't cost more than $300.

I have an idea: what if the Switch uses only part of the CPU/GPU while in handheld mode and the whole thing while in dockstation mode?
It could be the case, to save pwer specially.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

I have maintained all along that if what was rumored was true, this is not a hybrid. This is a hand held with an option for video out.

I was shredded for it then but I hope people have come to terms now that Nintendo has basically confirmed as much.

Great. I expect it to be now behind the 300€ mark. I guess that the difference between dock mode and portable mode is a downgrade to have a better battery life.
