Codename steam, nes remix, Splatoon, wonderful 101, Xenoblade, and that's ignoring ip revivals like fatal frame and kid Icarus. If all you look for is Mario and Pokemon all you will see is Mario and Pokemon

"Splatoon" is what I was thinking when I read "crazy, fun and weird" - and that game turned out to be wildly successful. So I'm pleased with this news!

Of Course that Super Mario maker is 2D Mario platform game where you building levels or play levels of other players. So its 2D Mario platformer, not new IP.

You're thinking to much about the final game and not about the initial concept for the game.

Super Mario Maker could have very much be a game about making platform levels. Have you heard of a game called Little Big Planet?

Not everything has to use an existing IP, Splatoon almost became a Mario Game, on the other hand Kirby Yarn at first was supposed to be a new IP.

 

The reality is that if Nintendo were convinced that those games would sell more by being new IPs instead of Mario games, we would have a lot more new IPs. But well, they are lazy, and they just care about new gameplay ideas and not enough about how they package those ideas.

If the NX doesn't have at least 3 new IPs from Nintendo between march and the end of the year. I'm out. I won't buy it.

Splatoon didn't almost become Mario game, Miyamoto just proposal Splatoon development team if they don't know or they are not sure about what characters to use for game, that they can use Mario if they want, ofcourse they didn't want that because there was never plan that Splatoon be Mario game.

 

I agree that they more care about new gameplay and less about how they package those ideas, but Splatoon prove they thinking about totally new IPs also, Splatoon proved them they can make huge, great and very successful game without using existing IP. Iam sure that after Splatoon phenomenal success they are more willing to make totally new IPs.

Speaking about, Splatoon is product of Nintendo "Garage" project, where young Nintendo developers working on new ideas for new games, Miyamoto after Splatoon said they have few more good ideas that are product of "Garage" project, its very posible that this new IP is actualy product of Garage. I aways saying, IMO, Splatoon is biggest win for Nintendo this gen.

 Probably NX will have some new IP on launch (maybe this new IP from rumour), it seems that Retro is working on new IP, also if I recall Monolith Soft also said they will work on new IP not new Xenoblade game, so there will definatly be new IPs.

 

Actually I think this gen we had less Mario games than usually, but we need more less of them, and because it's almost certain that NX will be unified platform and hybrid, so we could have even less Mario games.

Sorry mate but you're wrong here as Mario Maker is a new IP because it's a new series where the main focal part of it is the creation kit aspect, future games are likely to not even have Mario in it and dive into other IPs.
