There is one FF game that goes back to the roots, it's FFXIV. Job system, crystals, even the lifestream.

Technically the very first FF game and the original third FF game only had male characters so FFXV isnt the first game to have a all male party. Besides X-2 only had female playable characters so this type of thing isnt new.

I'm pretty sre the white mage of FF1 was always female.

Yeah, A Realm Reborn is really good.  The original XIV was a colosal trainwreck though :P

Might be what he is remembering.

Both Eiko and Garnet wore crystals that gave them power (to summon Alexander)

Not to mention that the theme about crystals being a life-sustaining force was also present in IX just was it was in the original game.
