Forums - Nintendo - What benefit does keeping the NX a secret still have?

The element of surprise? Or maybe Nintendo is making sure that they make a splash when they unveil it. The more they stay quiet about it the more I think the announcement will leave people breathless. Well at least I hope so. Nintendo has to step it up and I think they know this. I'll let them take their time.

Personally I think they should announce it in 2016. Sony and Microsoft will be happy if they don't. A Christmas with no Nintendo to worry about. I understand they wouldn't be launching the NX this holiday anyway but people won't hold off on buying a psvr, ps4 slim, ps4 neo or xbox slim if there's nothing announced.

Waiting for the NX is starting to make me angry. We have 6 months left to wait for this thing, and nothing has been offically announced. Well, we got one solid statement from Nintendo. Zelda: Breath of the Wild is going to be multiplatform on the Wii U and NX. also the NX wont have any graphical improvements over the Wii U, so that isnt very promising. And so far Nintendo has stated that they are avoiding announcing it too early because they are scared of imitators. and to that i have to say this - bullshit.

any company no matter who they are would not be able to come up with a similar concept and have it on the market within 6 months. and on the topic of that- which company? Microsoft and Sony both have their console plans set through holiday 2017, and i doubt they would want to copy them either. Microsft has abandoned the Kinect, and any other gimmicky productthey once had and Sony already has its own new thing being PSVR. and after the disastrous OUYA + a million other andoid consoles, what other company would dare make another console to try and have on the market? what is Nintendo so scared of?

at this point it is hurting them more than benefiting them by keeping the NX a secret. people want to know what they are buying, or will potentially buy. and holding it back for this long is starting to make people look in other directions. why wait to see what the NX is when the PS4 Pro with 4K upscaling is coming out soon? or what about the Xbox One Slim that fixes all the problems of the normal model and is more affordable? or what about the 3DS which is older, has a wider library, and has more support than the Wii U ever has, and is from the same company. really, what are they gaining from just not telling us what it is?

Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime was recently questioned about the difference between Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Wii U vs. NX. When asked by his host iJustine over the possible different between both versions of the game, he replied back: “the differences we’ll show those off in the future.”

I am fine with them being silent until February next year. What benefit does revealing the NX now have?

Letting rumors and speculation drive the narrative can prove disasterous

Especially if people allow their imaginations to run wild and then the NX turns out to not be up to their expectations.  Really, Nintendo would be better off announcing it now, then allow any disappoint to wear off and people to accept what the NX really is, concept and HW-wise.  This would also give them a few months to change any policies or aspects that people don't like.  If they announce only a month or so ahead of launch, any disappoint over the concept and/or specs of the NX will still be fresh in people's minds and will affect sales.

How about the fact that no one seems to be able to shut up about the NX, the platform is constantly on people's minds and hasn't even been unveiled yet.

Change our concept? Based on internet feedback? :miyamotolaugh:

So .... basically like the last four Christmases ...

Seriously though watch out for that Mini NES.

Maybe they just don't want to kill 3DS sales with Pokemon around the corner.

In fairness the 3DS did well for a number of those holidays.  Although you could argue the 3DS isn't really competing with them.
