Nah, you're both wrong. Youtube is the reason modding hit the mainstream. Even before Skyrim or Minecraft. Oblivion was pretty big for mod vids and articles. I'm sure there were some games before that. Hell, most gamers probably don't even use mods, but they sure as heck watch vids and read articles about them. Of course, mods have been a part of PC gaming since almost the beginning, becoming REALLY big with Doom. There are so many Doom mods, it's probably countless. There are probably even some that have been lost in time. |
Dunno about mainstream, but I was using mods as far back as Wolfenstein 3D, swapped with friends, downloaded from BBS. Mods and maps for Unreal tournament and Half Life Deathmatch were a big deal. Nvm the enormous mod community around flight simulator. And indeed Doom.
I'm sure most PC gamers knew about them before you tube was invented!
I actually avoid mods nowadays, barely have time to play the games as was intended. My only experience nowadays with mods is getting Mincraft mods to run for my kids, damn all those different versions and java memory limitations. (No different from Flight sim mods anyway, was always fun to fly half a plane when not all the assets are compatibble lol)
Anyway I'm curious what Sony exactly wants that Bethesda refuses to do. Btw did they ever fix the extreme frame rate drops when using too many pixel monitors? My awesome 240 power display ran at 1-2 fps, ruining my carefully timed blinking and flickering circuits :/
