So? You and a dozen other people will now buy an X1 to watch movies on it. I hope Sony doesn't have to file bankruptcy now. Remember when the PS3 was the best selling console since its launch because it was the cheapest bluray player? Yeah, me neither.

How come people are complaining that they have to buy multiple consoles to watch movies but not to actually play games? Where's the outrage that Sony dares to release a console that does not play Microsoft or Nintendo games and that you have to buy additional hardware to play them?

While I would really like if they included the UHD BR support, I guess they learned the lesson with the PS3. I didn't helped them before, it actually killed them because of the extra cost (way higher than a 4K BR). I must admit that I didn't used the BR drive a lot. With the PS3 and PS4, I have 3 BR movies, one of which I got as a gift. I've rented movies once and probably watched around 8 hours of BR on my consoles, while my time on Netflix and even WWE Network is probably on the hundreds of hours already.

It all depends on how much the drive adds to costs. I would say that if it is more than 50 bucks, it's worth the cut.

That doesn't change the source material. A 35mm print is more than what 4K can handle, and even modern digital films ... more than a few are shot at 4K digital.

I'd say actually 2K native films are the minority of any studio's film catalog. By far.

From what I saw, most films are indeed shot in digital 2K, some in 4K and some in 35mm. 2K is by far the most common.

i dont watch movies anymore or series of any kind except porn which is more and more replaced with videogames too. Dont get the big deal, people who are complaing have simple an agenda for the PS4 to fail

It is supposed to be Sony's TOP of the line PlayStation, it's supposed to do everything the standard PS4 does but on a much grander scale. That is why people are disappointed. It's essentially more of the same, not too different. Its supposed to be the 4K killer console, but it turns out it is not.

Why would you not offer everything 4K capable in your 4K console?

So that it is cheap? Cheap console that plays games > console with a 4K blu-ray player.

This is basically the opposite argument of the Ps3. It did everything. It had blu-ray, BC etc. It didn't sell well until.. thats right - it was cheap.

It is like how the xbox 360 didn't include a blu-ray... and then missed out on stuff (like MG4) and had games with many, many discs. Except.. there is no games lost this way.

You get all the games you want, and you can stream all the 4k content you want. You simply miss out on a 4k player and in turn it is made cheaper.

Simple huh?

Nope, not simple as that.

PS3 was an intro console, they expected all PS2 players to migrate towards it at a rediculous price right away. This is an ENTIRELY different situation, it's a mid-gen bump. It's meant to be the top of the line 4K capable console and the top of the line PS4. Sony has the option for those who want a cheaper console, we call that the PS4 Slim model. And as you can see by the outrage from gamers, they wanted a top of the line 4K console...Sony did not deliver that on any front.

Simple huh?

Never, im the kind of person that watches a movie once then never wants to see it again.

Owning several Blu-ray discs myself, I see as redundant owning a $30 4K Blu-ray movie disc. I don't have a proper TV where I can watch them properly, so I'm happy with normal BD for now.

I've only bought like 4 dvd and 1 bluray in my whole life (I own like a hundred VHSs though, blame it on the 90s). I guess I won't mind

It's hard to grasp the outrage going on atm. For years I've been advocating the quality of blu-ray over streaming. But it is always physical media is dead, streaming is the future, the future is now. People don't care about the extra quality, convenience greater all. And sadly the numbers back that up even though blu-rays can often be gotten cheaper than a 48h digital rental.

All that was needed to bring back physical media was Sony not to include a 4K player. Who would have thought!

"outrage from gamers" because they can't play physical 4K DVD movies? That seems a bit funny doesn't it? Like people being mad a new car can't hold JUMBO cups and you have to settle for just regular ones.

Looking at the poll almost three times as many people prefer it to be $399 and no 4k blu-ray.

Looking at Amazon you know what I see under number 1?

The people outraged are the people that only wanted to spend "a little" extra to get a player. They rather have payed $500 for both instead of $400 for one and $300 for another.

Just like people would have been outraged if the console cost $500 and they were paying $100 more for something they don't want.

So yes it is very simple. People complain because they like to complain. There would have been complaints no matter what.

Are you really citing a poll and Amazon's video game chart as sources? Thats my only question. I've already said my piece.

i have:

almost 400 dvds
just over 20 blu rays
will never own a UHD disc.

physical is dead to me.  for years now people have been harping on 1080p not really mattering because 720p (or 900p when ) is really just good enough.  now ps4 pro doesn't support UHD and it's the end of the fucking world.

i've seen and even posted this chart hundreds of times on this forum but as of yesterday the science of vision clearly took a turn for the more advanced when we all learned ps4 pro lives in the dark ages...
