4K blu-Ray player is a niche within a niche .

IF

=> you have 4K TV => You have 4K blu Ray player => Have a 4K blu Ray movie => This Niche applies to you.

4K TVs aren't even mainstream yet.

Apparently somebody forget to tell Sony that because they're marketing a console towards 4KTV users. Half their press event yesterday was an infomercial for selling 4KTVs.

If you don't have a 4KTV or don't plan on buying one then all this PS4 Pro discussion should be moot to you anyway.

You do have a point but we have to remember that games like Rise of the Tomb Raider will let you choose whether to run in 4K/30 FPS or 1080p/60 FPS.

Sony would love to sell more 4K TVs but they know they have to make PS4 Pro an attractive buy for HD TV owners as well.

That's what introducing a new format is all about. It doesn't become mainstream on its own.

Not that big of a deal, they already said that 4kBD support can be patched in via firmware, and they have clearly learned from their past mistakes.

Pretty sure it can't be patched in. It's a physical hardware difference between the lenses.

Yes, Sony biggest mistake is to focus on increasing their sales while providing total focus for gaming with PlayStation.
What a joke has Sony become.

It's actually a funny bizarro land that this has now become the moniker for some Playstation fans.

I remember Nintendo fans being ridiculed for that exact reasoning ("movies are bad mmmmk, games centric is the best") like 15 years ago.

It's really like being in a bizarro Twilight Zone episode.

I would bet a million bucks if PS4 Pro did 4K Blu-Ray + 6 TFLOPS and XBox Scorpio was uprendered sub-4K resolution at 4TFLOP with no 4K Blu-Ray support, MS would be getting killed on this board for making a "fake" 4K console.

Lets be honest:
$399 buys you

1) PS4 Pro 1TB
2) Xbox one S 2TB

What is better value? gaming wise? Obviously the PS4.

Now the Xbox @ 299 is clearly one of the best UHD players, cheapest, plays game supports HDR, its a good deal. but again gaming wise, 299 for a ps4 slim which also supports HDR and also has a free game with the same hard drive space, its a flip of the coin.

Overall its nice to see Xbox and PS go a slightly different route, I do feel the PRO would have been much better for UPGRADING current ps4 owners by adding a UHD player, they could have released 2 versions also, hell.. why not right. 399 for the 1TB and 499 for a 2TB one with a UHD drive, that would have been the perfect scenario for me.

Price difference doesn't even need to be that extreme. 4K BR player only adds like $15 to the manufacturing cost.

It's disappointing, but definitely not BS. It's also an interesting decision, and not in a good way. Apparently Sony thought the market for 4k BD isn't big enough for the price.

Yeah, it's actually quite funny and bizarro (lol).

A bit like how Nintendo fans have changed their stand towards ports and mobile games

Games was always all that mattered to me. I'm a gamer.
Either you go look for someone who cares about that or you just straight up let it go.

Well yeah I'm a gamer too ... but part of gaming technology.

And it's both Sony and MS who are playing up this whole 4K thing ... well OK, great. You got me Sony, I want a 4KTV now ... oh but wait now I have to accept a bunch of compromises to that experience.

That's where it goes south for me.

If PS4 Pro was the exact same product but it had a XBox logo on it, my guess is the reaction on this board would largely be "LOL Microsoft! More upscaled XBox games! Not real 4K! Can't even play 4K movies either! Haha MS blows it again, gonna wait for the more powerful PS Scorpio with real 4K and 4K movies!".

Tell me I'm wrong, but deep down I think we all know that's the truth.
