Forums - Sony - Andrew House: We've seen that video streaming is more popular

With our user base, it’s the second biggest use case for people’s time on the system so we place more emphasis on that area.

“Our feeling is that while physical media continues to be a big part of the games business, we see a trend on video towards streaming,” he said.

When asked if the arrival of PlayStation 4 Pro and Microsoft’s Project Scorpio heralded the end of the traditional five-to-seven year architecture lifecycle, House stated: “I think that since this is our first foray into this kind of mid-cycle innovation, it’s far too early to call that. He also refused to rule out further hardware instalments in the PlayStation 4 generation. “We think that for a really substantial period of time this is the PlayStation 4 lineup. We’re very comfortable with that.”

The veteran PlayStation executive was bullish when asked about the company’s competition. Microsoft has received a positive response to its Xbox One S machine which – for the same price as the slimline PS4 – adds 4K video capabilities, both for streaming and disc-based content. The Project Scorpio iteration, due in Winter 2017, also looks to be substantially more powerful than PS4 Pro in terms of raw technical specifications, with greater graphics performance.

House, however, pointed to the PlayStation 4’s market dominance and denied that Pro was in any way a response to Microsoft’s Project Scorpio project. “When Playstation 4 Pro was being conceived there wasn’t a word about Project Scorpio in the marketplace. I would suggest that ‘reactive’ isn’t our approach this time around,” he said.

“Lifecycles take on, at a certain point, a sense of momentum. Thanks to the efforts of great developers around the world and consumers that have placed their trust in us, we’re 40m units into this lifecycle. Our declared goal is to be a further 20m units above that by the end of next year. At that point we’ve got a pretty good sense of where the momentum of the lifecycle is, but I think the Pro can be something new, innovative and possibly take us in a slightly different direction.”

Regarding the PlayStation 4 Pro, he suggested the Xbox wasn’t even being considered its main competition. Rather, it was the PC. “I saw some data that really influenced me,” he said. “It suggested that there’s a dip mid-console lifecycle where the players who want the very best graphical experience will start to migrate to PC, because that’s obviously where it’s to be had. We wanted to keep those people within our eco-system by giving them the very best and very highest [performance quality]. So the net result of those thoughts was PlayStation 4 Pro – and, by and large, a graphical approach to game improvement.”

"House, however, pointed to the PlayStation 4’s market dominance" so basically he's saying that they don't have to implement 4K Blu Ray because they're winning.

As I said earlier today.

The PS5 Exists.

How do you get that out of what he actually said?  I even went back to see if I'd missed something and couldn't find it.

As we all know, when you do not have a feature, its always because its in your best interest. When the competitor has a feature its in their best interest. When all is said and done, being the big boy on the market means you dictate what you customers will have and accept as features. When you are the company playing catch up, you add everything you can to differentiate your product from the leader. This is why I like the underdog system more than the leader. You get stuff that the dominate system will not offer because they do not have to.

^ thats out of context.

If you read it he was asked about the scorpio.

Read it again, you mis understood it.

He explains they started planning the PS4 pro, long before Microsoft started working on project scorpio.

The reason why?  They have research that shows mid gen, they lose potential costumers (that buy consoles) because they choose to buy gameing pcs instead (because they want better graphics at that point, than the launch consoles had).

basically PS4 pro, is to keep people from investing in gameing pcs.

Well, obviously they were working on the Pro before the Scorpio, if that wasn't the case it wouldn't be able to come out a year before it.

I know what you want to say, i choose my systems on personnal tastes, but ou seem to completly forgot the software part of it. If the underdog has a player but less games of your taste, what's the point ?

When it comes to games I find that all systems usually have games that I want to play.  This is the reason I have a X1, PS4 and WiiU.  All the systems get play time within my household because each one have games my family wants to play.  When the whole war of systems started I have always said I like MS in the catchup position then the dominate position.  The reason why is that MS works much harder to get market share when they are behind then when they are in front.  Hell Sony is the same way and if the ecosystem is competitive it would be good if both systems were neck and neck then we would see both sides strive to outdo the the other.  I really do not have any preference for any one system, I just like to play games.

It's a pretty simple situation, honestly. I don't know why people are trying to turn it into something more. Perhaps genuine disappointment for some or something ... else for others. Sometimes people try to project personal feelings into business decisions and it turns into a circus.

From what I can see, Sony's take on the data available resulted in them believing that most or more of their customers feel a cheaper price is more compelling than a 4k Blu-Ray player.

Is that true? I guess we shall see. Personally, I don't care about 4k in the slightest. I'll gladly take the $50+ savings (or whatever). The rest of the market? The real reaction, as opposed to online forums, will be interesting.
