I'm really hoping we get some good sales on 4ktv's this holiday, gonna need one.

They've already started in my area. I saw a 55" Visio 4K TV for 749.00 the other day. Thinking about picking it up.

In absolute terms I'd say many, not that many compared to Netflix and streaming users (at least in the countries where those services are really viable).

But the point is another. Sony (and Playstation) always played an active role in the introduction of new formats (since there simply aren't other TV devices that move as many units as PS consoles). Blu-rays and DVDs weren't that much popular as well at the time they released the Ps3 and the Ps2 respectively.

More than a reaction to the market, they deliberately decided they don't care that much about blu-rays and they want to focus soley on gaming. Of course they're free to do so, but at the same time it's perfectly understandable some users aren't exactly happy about it.

They moved away from that with the PS4. No CD player, no media server capabilities and it was an amazing success.

Removing those capabilities is clearly not the reason of Ps4's success.

Coming from a company that have actively used their consoles to push and develop formats for nearly 20 years, and being the main proponent of the blu-ray technology itself as well as a major presence in the movie industry, it seems like a really strange thing to omit from their upgraded model.
The only explanation is that they have no faith in 4k blu-ray, which is sad for us buffs who don't appreciate the poor comparative quality of 4k streaming.

Except they did not do that with the PS4 - their fastest selling console to date.

(I read it wrong, move along)

It sure as heck doesn't cost $400 or $700 to make, which the two solo players cost.

The very fact that MS has one in the Xbox One S and the console costs $300 shows that it does not cost a fortune. Microsoft is not going to sell their console for $300 if just the Blu Ray drive costs to manufacture $200.

No one here said it costs that much. The only assumption anyone made was you in that it couldn't cost more than $10.

There is people talking now saying that Sony saved $15 by not putting it in.

Your right. I was way off.  The UHD drive costs $15.50 more than a normal blu ray drive. And that is for Microsoft. Sony would be less.

No, you're right. Not focusing on them and focusing on gaming was.

I don't it's a huge deal in any way, but isn't it strange that the PS4Pro can't play 4K Blurays when Sony is one of the founders of Bluray? Is the console even a 4K console, or does it only upscale to 4K and therefore isn't able to play actual 4K content from a disc? It would explain why it only offers streaming in 4K and not Blurays.

Switch the words from "game" to games and "practice" to movies and there you go. Pretty much how I see it.

"We aint talking about the game , we're talking about practice man"

I didn't watch the show so I was late to the hate party and I thought not having it was dumb until I thought about the fact that I owned around 500 DVD's and only about 5 blu ray's (which were gifts).   I use my console to watch movies and play games but I dont buy the movie discs anymore or rent them really.  I stream now and I bet I'm not alone and I further think Sony of all companies know this and have strong data to suggest the 4k disc player wasn't very important.

I am on the other side of my sig....am I warm or cold?

Marco....

It's a shame Sony isn't pushing 4k BD. As much as mass market is much more streaming oriented, unless you have a gigabit internet it's impossible for streaming reach the bitrates of Blu-Ray. And 4k with HDR needs extreme bitrates to be worth it, there's no point in getting 4k from an ultra compressed source. Just like 1080p, whitout a proper bitrate and a good mastered material crazy high resolutions don't mean nothing.

fastest selling sony console to date, Wii has actually surpaced it if you are gonna use to date. Ahh I see someone else corrected this fact, move along.

Well, he does say "their", implying that he's specifically referring to Sony.
