Forums - Nintendo - Emily Rogers: NX Below XB1/PS4 In Power; Battery Life Is Not Great

She mentions the fan cooling being loud ... Nintendo couldn't be making a portable that has a fan in it .... could they?

That would be interesting if its in the final build. The only tablet I know of with a fan in it is the Microsoft Surface.

yeah the fan part is a major red flag as the the reliability of this rumor.

It seems many rumors are converging on some points though.

Gonna be fun to see what the actual device is.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Oh boy, this better not be true! A crappy battery life is the last thing I wanted..

But how well could it run them,  especially if third parties are phoning it in? If the frame rate is garbage or the textures and other effects have to be turned down is it even worth It? And how long would a game that's pushing the system last in portable mode?

Seems like a modern day Wii to me from a hardware perspective.

This is an 830M running Batman: Arkham Knight (keep in mind this is a PS4/XB1 only console game) ... it's not bad to be honest.

If Nintendo can get that fidelity in a portable for even 3 hours on the road, even if you reduce the resolution a bit further to 1024x600 ... I'd be pretty happy with that.

And I think the Tegra X2 should be capable of that, my worry is Nintendo will gimp the chip and cheap out on the battery.

But the frame rate looked like absolute garbage in the video. Not just slow framerates either, it seemed like quite a bit of frame drops, meaning they should really turn down some of those effects, the hardware can't  really handle it.

Most mobile chips don't do well if you push them for too long. All these benchmarks mean jack if the chip can't sustain operations at max power, and this is a protable, imagine being out on a warm day and your games are running slowly because the device has built up too much heat.

X2 may draw less power but actively cooling it would be the wiser choice, it's gonna be less noisy for sure and a revised NX with 10nm chips will be the one to get if noise is too much of an issue.

I'm ok with a fan for performance sake. Doesn't a fan eat further battery though?

It does. But a device this big will be stuffed with lots of battery I suppose, it's thick and it's will have the footprint of an iPad mini. We are definitely not looking at iPad kind of battery-life though, you will be runnig games at max CPU/GPU.

A big battery will require long charging times though, hmmm...

It will be really interesting to see if the final version has an active fan or not. The rumor is the Tegra X2 sucks less power so they'll just swap out the X1 and remove the fan. But I'm still not sure if they'd have to throttle. I'd be OK with a fan if it means the chip can run at max power.

(again, rumors)

While most speculation about the NX dev kit fan is about simulating the final hw, I'm more on the side of it being there as a stability feature (not to mention  dev kits appearing rudimentary in general) . If NX features a custom X2, despite 16nm efficiency gains I still expect it to be downclocked, (350-400 gflops single precision ).  after the tiny battery in the Wii u pad, Im just really worried about the battery nintendo will provide, if its 3hrs or less what would be the point of  its tablet-y form .

Because for all we know some guy off the street could have told her this. It allows us to determine whether or not she is getting information from an insider.

doubting her is perfectly fine and a valid thing to do, but questioning why she doesnt site her sources for such private matters as this is kind of a laughable stance to take.

If the leaker is in this much jeopardy for putting out this much NX news, maybe it wasn't worth leaking it in the first place. I could understand if the leaker was exposing something shady, but this isn't anything like that.

No way it doesn't have an on board camera. AR will be a key selling point.

"The device is around 14 – 15 mm in thickness."

What device? The chip?Because the NX itself cant be that thin.I mean, it would almost be a paper in thickness then!

Or maybe im just tired and mz brain in not working right and Im just understanding this wrong.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

This is a tablet that's 15mm thick, it's not bad.

While much of this may be true of the dev kit, I highly doubt this is an accurate depiction of the final product. While some things, such as the screen resolution, are unlikely to change, things like battery life, cooling, and even the GPU could easily change (if past products are any indication). I wouldn't expect the GPU to get more powerful necessarily, but it may be significantly more power efficient than whatever's in there right now.
