Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo really needs to be more ambitious with NX titles

Safe/conservative/lazy games just don't inspire and impress the way that ambitious ones do.

A decade from now, I'll still be in awe of Mario Galaxy; of its epic sense of adventure, its sweeping soundtrack, its wondrous abstract levels, its celestial starscapes. 3D World, on the other hand, will be long forgotten.

This is what I've been saying since launch but people feel offended every time someone points at the lack of ambition that game had compared to the previous 3D Mario games.

And the same goes for DK.

Funny because a decade gone past people don't have trouble remembering Sunshine a game that which people rag on, Einsam_Delphin is correct it's not ambition people remember it's the quality. No Man's Sky was Amibitious guess how that's turning out I'm willing to bet people will remember 3DW in years to come but forget the former.

People here also haven't even defined ambition and described what makes one game more ambitious than another.

I was saying it'll be largely forgotten by me, but consider that even if we're talking about gamers in general, Sunshine is not all that fondly remembered, no where near as much so as 64 or Galaxy. 3D World likewise will not go down in history as a true classic.

3 years after Galaxy's release, it was being called one of the greatest games of all time, yet 3 years after 3D World, people hardly even talk about it.

Not being fondly remember as another title doesn't mean it's not remembered as a good game, the argument you're pushing here is it's not as fondly remembered as much as one of the other best games in history so it's a problem. It's like saying Deus Ex MD will not be as fondly remembered as the original like it's a problem when the game in question is stilla really good game being compared to one of history's greats.

Games like Galaxy only come once in a while it's one of the few games with a rating that matches OOT, your argument would be like complaining that Ronaldo is not as good as Pele in this instance as like 3DW or not I can't really think of a better 3D platformer this gen tbh.

The final three years of GameCube also had similar type games. All minor titles and spinoffs which were lower budget. Only Metroid Prime 2 had any kind of major budget to it, and that still came out 2 years prior to the Wii.

Those games are easy to put out without sacrificing a lot of resources. Anything Nintendo dedicates to Wii U and 3DS is taking it away from the much more important NX.

It is true about the Wii. Despite the criticism, the Wii had the strongest lineup of Nintendo games of any console ever. A lot of that had to do with Nintendo pushing resources to Wii development fairly early on in the GameCube's lifecycle. It's similar with the NX, Zelda is launching on it with a port being given to the older failed console. While GameCube had its fair share of good games, it didn't have a game as impactful as Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time. With Mario Sunshine, it had a stop-gap Mario game similar to Mario 3D World on Wii U. Super Mario Galaxy was the true successor to Mario 64.

Mainline Mario games are typically considered masterpieces, so for ones like Sunshine and 3D World not to be, they are sub-par by series standards.

2004-2006 still had many great games for the GC. Twilight Princess, Paper Mario TTYD, Resident Evil 4 and Fire Emblem just to name a few.

Well to be fair, in case NX come out in March 2017, the games released on Wii U from March 2015-Mach 2017 will be Splatoon, Mario Maker, Yoshi Wolly World, Xenoblade X, Twilight Princess HD, #FE and Paper Mario.

Maybe not classics like the GameCube but not that bad. The negative point is that some of those games were announced almost since console launch. Just a note to myself.

I don't necessarily have a problem with the titles, I just think Nintendo needs to work harder on spine arts... they've been bland and same-y this whole gen.

Twilight Princess was promoted and released primarily as a Wii title only coming out on GameCube afterwards, selling far fewer units. Paper Mario and Fire Emblem have their fans, but one is a spinoff and the other is a minor title. Resident Evil 4 was not even developed by Nintendo, it was a Capcom game.

GameCube's support from Nintendo was bare bones, Nintendo was primarily interested in preparing for the Wii at this time. While GameCube has its fans, it was more or less a stop-gap console between N64 and Wii. That's why there weren't any killer apps released for it.
