They definitly need to have a dedicated handheld version if they want to go forward with this, and keep their core gamer maket happy. A 7" 1080p handheld with a full DS4 controll scheme on it would be absolutly king for this. Also it should have a massive 6000mAh battery so it could last for the long haul.
- Well if they want to have a dedicated SKU then they can go for it. Not what I - or apparently the public at large - want though. I want a tablet that I can use for other functions and when I wanna game, I game.
- Has a 5" phone SKU
This is the single most important piece of the puzzle. If they plan to make another handheld it has to have a phone model. This is the only way to have high enough usage to get devs to prot their apps to the device. if they want things like banking apps, resturant apps, health apps, and the like, they have to have this in people hands 24/7.
- Agreed. A phone SKU is needed, alongside with a tablet SKU. Anything else could be done to cater gamers.
- Is built on top of android and you use android for all your app and regular needs, including access to google play store
No, No, No, No. Sony can not have any ties to Android if they are looking to continue with PlayStation in the mobile field. They have to keep the PlayStation brand safe, and having Android tied up with PlayStation would be dangerous for the brand. Sony just needs to focus on getting their core gamers to switch to the new PlayStation OS, then they can slowly start to build up an app store, and focus on broadening past the first 50 Million people after that.
- Wishful thinking on your part. Sony is not capable of developing a robust OS that can challenge Android or iOS in terms of functionalities and apps. Even Microsoft - a much more capable and experienced OS developer - has been unable to match them. People expect a LOT of things on their phones now, from functionalities to apps and even if Sony were to tackle it, it would be years until they got parity, if they ever did. No one is gonna buy a barebones phone with limited functionality and apps and wait for them to "slowly build up an app store". I paid X amount of money, I want my apps and functionalities now. You say it's dangerous for the brand, I say it broadens the brand. Insted of doing a half assed attempt like Playstation Mobile - which was android focused - they go all out. Again, no one wants a Playstation OS on their phone, I would guess that includes the vast majority of core gamers.
- The Vita OS or whatever custom OS is a dedicated app that you launch from android
Again, No, Absolutly Not. They can not have any ties to Android with a native gaming program. Things like PS Now, PS Vue, PS Video, and PS Music are fine. Anything cloud based that can not be pirated is perfect for Android, local gaming content on android will get hack in days, and Sony will be caught up in another battle with hackers.
Secondly, they absolutly can not use an ARM based system so that throws Andoid out the window. Any device going forward needs to be based on the same mobile based CPU in the PS4. Sony needs to have a single unified APU across all home and mobile devices, and one universal development language to make app development and scailing seamless.
- The added security would come from the OS app itself. It's not like they would be trying to sell APKs of their games directly to the user on google play. Furthermore Sony is always in a battle with hackers. Always. I can have a 3.6 FW vita hacked if I want.
On your second point, they can use whatever hardware they want. Not sure why that would throw out android as android is in all types of hardware and configurations. You probably won't agree with these points, but for me, I have no interest in a dedicated handheld device ever again. I would probably buy a phone SKU and a tablet SKU if it's build on top of Android and I get all the Android benefits (would buy the latter probably day one as I'm looking for a tablet this Fall). I would not even bother looking if it was a app and feature deficient "Playstation OS" built on them.
- Has detachable controller set up and bluetooth option to play with your DS4
This will be great if one of the devices is a straight up slab smartphone design. However, I feel like the Tablet, and at least one version of the phone should fell very much like using a DS4 already.
I would not want any other clunk on my phone/tablet when I'm using it to browse the web or watch a movie. A detachable controler would feel great on a phone and tablet and could actually have extra battery as well. Just imagine an ipad mini/ipad air/iphone 6 sized device with detachable controler option.
- Has TV Out option
If Sony does another handheld it has to have a shared library with all other PlayStation products. So I don't see the handheld having TV out, but it will absolulty have cross buy, so every game you own will be playable on your PS4, you PS Tablet, and your PS Phone.
- This would be an appreciated hardware option for people traveling. Obviously you would most likely not use it at home, but if you're traveling and get to your hotel room, you would like to plug it into the TV and play that way. I don't know why they would bother.
