I have one. Sony hasn't done enough for it.

I could pinpoint specific mistakes like the proprietary mem cards andlack of L2/R2, but I'm quite happy with my Vita and own it since the day of release.

Going forward, if they could solve these 2 issues, plus boost the performance in a way it could play the full PS3 digital library, I'm sure it would be extremelly successful.

If, and that's a pretty damn big if, they have a solution to unify their library across Neo, regular PS4 and a future handhelf (obviously at lower specs) for digital games, that would be monumental. They would have to make sure there is easy scalability between all devices for games going forward.

That would come with a pretty big price tag, more in line with the cost of a premium phone than with a console and probably would need to be advertised as such. I say they are crazy enough to give it a shot :)

I absolutly believe they will make another handheld in the future, and that a PlayStation Mobile line of produts will replace the Xperia line. There have been to many rumblings from Kaz about such a thing for it not to eventually happen. The only question now is when.

A much as I would love for them to have come up with a way to make all PS4 games playable at 720p on a mobile, I just don't quite think the tech is there yet. So I think we won't see a new handheld tell 2018 with the 7nm FinFET chips.

However, they may have decidied that they are ready to jump in to the market ASAP, and the are going to be happy with something like 540p on a mobile device, but upscaled to a 5" 1080p display on the phone, or a 7" display on the tablet. If this is the case then they cold have a major revision in 2019 to a device that could handle 1080p gaming on the go.

Obviously only time will tell. I have been PS only since PS4 came out, but the Vita is starting to be imposible to use as a phone. If they were to come out with a PS Phone right now it would be perfect timing for me.

I pretty much agree 100%. The tech is not there yet, but, the background work that needs to be done is a OS implementation that could be ubiquitous to their entire Playstation lineup. Allowing games to be coded and easily ported between devices, lowering resolution, AA and other eye candy on the lower powered hardware (much like you can get different settings on a PC) should be the way to go.

A PS Phone, in which a bi yearly revision could come up with subscription plans, would be huge. I'd pass my S7 edge to my gf in a hearbeat if this came to be :D

I wonder if they removed the back touch and slimmed it down if they could get it down to $99

My dreams

-Slim down the area of the back TouchPad. It doesn't need to be more than 1" x 9/16". This can save on space and cost.
-Add R2/L2 buttons
-Add clickability to the sticks for R3/L3
-Use a slider design (alá PSPgo)
-Open "Vita 2" storefront; offer PS1, PS2, and PSP Classics. Begin releasing more PS2 Classics.
-Begin reworking PS3 Remasters for Vita 2
-Open "App" storefront; begin adding high profile apps and mobile games (specifically Gamevil, the most "traditional" game developer for mobile)
-Begin development of high profile titles (AAA unnecessary, games like Freedom Wars and Tearaway will do fine)
-Release 2 SKUs; a phone version and a non-phone version (similar to iPhone and iPod Touch)
-Use MicroSD
-Use Vita Game carts (Vita 2 game carts would use the same format)
-AC wireless
-Support MHL, Chromecast, and Miracast
-Don't. Fucking. Use. AT&T.

plz just give us a vita phone, more there isnt really needed to save the vita and handhelds

Right on the money, give us the PlayStation phone we have been asking for since 2005. I understood why they couldn't do it during the Sony Ericsson days, but their is no reason not to do it now. If we had a high end PlayStation Phone with real games from Sony and third parties with full PSN support it would sell better than PS4 is right now.

Unless it:

- Is tablet sized (i.e. 7" or so)

They definitly need to have a dedicated handheld version if they want to go forward with this, and keep their core gamer maket happy. A 7" 1080p handheld with a full DS4 controll scheme on it would be absolutly king for this. Also it should have a massive 6000mAh battery so it could last for the long haul.

- Well if they want to have a dedicated SKU then they can go for it. Not what I - or apparently the public at large - want though. I want a tablet that I can use for other functions and when I wanna game, I game.

- Has a 5" phone SKU

This is the single most important piece of the puzzle. If they plan to make another handheld it has to have a phone model. This is the only way to have high enough usage to get devs to prot their apps to the device. if they want things like banking apps, resturant apps, health apps, and the like, they have to have this in people hands 24/7.

- Agreed. A phone SKU is needed, alongside with a tablet SKU. Anything else could be done to cater gamers.

- Is built on top of android and you use android for all your app and regular needs, including access to google play store

No, No, No, No. Sony can not have any ties to Android if they are looking to continue with PlayStation in the mobile field. They have to keep the PlayStation brand safe, and having Android tied up with PlayStation would be dangerous for the brand. Sony just needs to focus on getting their core gamers to switch to the new PlayStation OS, then they can slowly start to build up an app store, and focus on broadening past the first 50 Million people after that.

- Wishful thinking on your part. Sony is not capable of developing a robust OS that can challenge Android or iOS in terms of functionalities and apps. Even Microsoft - a much more capable and experienced OS developer - has been unable to match them. People expect a LOT of things on their phones now, from functionalities to apps and even if Sony were to tackle it, it would be years until they got parity, if they ever did. No one is gonna buy a barebones phone with limited functionality and apps and wait for them to "slowly build up an app store". I paid X amount of money, I want my apps and functionalities now. You  say it's dangerous for the brand, I say it broadens the brand. Insted of doing a half assed attempt like Playstation Mobile - which was android focused - they go all out. Again, no one wants a Playstation OS on their phone, I would guess that includes the vast majority of core gamers.

- The Vita OS or whatever custom OS is a dedicated app that you launch from android

Again, No, Absolutly Not. They can not have any ties to Android with a native gaming program. Things like PS Now, PS Vue, PS Video, and PS Music are fine. Anything cloud based that can not be pirated is perfect for Android, local gaming content on android will get hack in days, and Sony will be caught up in another battle with hackers.

Secondly, they absolutly can not use an ARM based system so that throws Andoid out the window. Any device going forward needs to be based on the same mobile based CPU in the PS4. Sony needs to have a single unified APU across all home and mobile devices, and one universal development language to make app development and scailing seamless.

- The added security would come from the OS app itself. It's not like they would be trying to sell APKs of their games directly to the user on google play. Furthermore Sony is always in a battle with hackers. Always. I can have a 3.6 FW vita hacked if I want.

On your second point, they can use whatever hardware they want. Not sure why that would throw out android as android is in all types of hardware and configurations. You probably won't agree with these points, but for me, I have no interest in a dedicated handheld device ever again. I would probably buy a phone SKU and a tablet SKU if it's build on top of Android and I get all the Android benefits (would buy the latter probably day one as I'm looking for a tablet this Fall). I would not even bother looking if it was a app and feature deficient "Playstation OS" built on them.

- Has detachable controller set up and bluetooth option to play with your DS4

This will be great if one of the devices is a straight up slab smartphone design. However, I feel like the Tablet, and at least one version of the phone should fell very much like using a DS4 already.

I would not want any other clunk on my phone/tablet when I'm using it to browse the web or watch a movie. A detachable controler would feel great on a phone and tablet and could actually have extra battery as well. Just imagine an ipad mini/ipad air/iphone 6 sized device with detachable controler option.

- Has TV Out option

If Sony does another handheld it has to have a shared library with all other PlayStation products. So I don't see the handheld having TV out, but it will absolulty have cross buy, so every game you own will be playable on your PS4, you PS Tablet, and your PS Phone.

 - This would be an appreciated hardware option for people traveling. Obviously you would most likely not use it at home, but if you're traveling and get to your hotel room, you would like to plug it into the TV and play that way.

I don't know why they would bother.

If Sony comes out with a mobile line of products that plays every title in the PS4 libaray and shares apps with the PS4, then they are on their way to taking back a huge chunck of the mobile market. They have no chance to ever gain traction with Xperia, because it can never take advantage of all of Sony. A PlayStation Phone would have all of the resources it needs to be a success, and it would do it in a way that would see Sony make massive profit and revenue gains, and eat away at Apple and Googles mobile duoply.

We need Sony, Micorosft, and Nintendo to make this happen. Hopefully NX and Trinity will get the ball rolling, and lead to a Microsoft phone with deep roots in gaming. There is no reason that all three companies couldn't have 100M plus users in their phone base, and take ~10% of the phone market each.

I think you're being unrealistic thinking people would wait years for a "Playstation OS" to reach parity with Android in terms of apps and functionalities. That's assuming parity will ever be reached. People didn't give MS that chance, Sony won't get it either. That's not even taking into account the "Maps" app that was removed from the Vita OS and was pretty much garbage before that. Developers don't want to update their apps for multiple OS. It's a pipe dream of yours, IMO.

If it's true it has to be a redesigned Vita. Perhaps semi-new console that extends Vita capabilities.

Maybe now it pairs up with PS4s to stream to the screen similar to the WiiU gamepad. Media remains the same: PSP and PSOne classics digital and Vita media. Perhaps a newer chip that enables PS2 classic emulation. A better OS.

Psp has 300+m software sales recorded here, not including digital downloads since the Playstation store was available on the PSP in its later years.

To put that in perspective the PS4 so far has sold 260m software (with obviously a ton of digital games too) But even the 3ds which doesn't have as much digital sales has moved just 246m games so yeah... could say that the PSP sold a lot of units for piracy but at the same time each console sold had at least 4 legit games sold along with it.

Let's also not forget there was an entire SKU that was Digital only.

Oh yeah... the PSPGo, how in the world did I forget that beast, we have 2 of them in our household lol.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

There are Dreamcast 2 rumors every single year as well but it doesn't mean I have to take them seriously.

A new gen handheld would make no sense for Sony. An 'NPSV' with L&R2&3 would be pretty cool. Regardless I'm highly skeptical of this one.

To be more precise, as of may 22nd, 270.9 million units of software had been sold for the PS4 between retail and digital channels (a lot of retail software is overtracked on VGC).
