Last week, Hello Games boss Sean Murray told Red Bull that there would be no paid DLC for No Man’s Sky.

“We do want to add a ton of features like we’ve just discussed: Freighters, bases, these type of things. But we want to do it for free,” Murray told Red Bull. “You’ve paid for the game, so you should get this stuff without paying even more money. So no, there will be no paid DLC, just patches.”

Now, just a week later, Murray appears to be hedging his bets.

Speaking with the Daily Star, Murray referred to his previous comments as “perhaps naive.” According to that website, when pressed on whether the game’s future updates will always remain free, Murray said:“Maybe in the future there’s some reason why we just couldn’t possibly afford to do a certain feature without charging for it.”

Granted, this isn’t exactly confirmation of future paid DLC. Nevertheless, it hardly instills confidence. No Man’s Sky has already become bogged down in controversy with apparently broken promises and performance problems on PC. Murray has been ambiguous about many of the game’s features in the past, and now many players feel, if not lied to precisely, then somewhat misled.

Saying there will be no paid DLC, then calling one’s own comments “naive” a week later is the sort of thing that leaves a lot of people scratching their heads. It doesn’t help build confidence or trust in the game’s future. At this point, it’s probably best for Hello Games (and Sony) to stop talking about any future plans, and build a solid roadmap for the game’s future content.

Then they can come out and say exactly what they mean without any confusion.

For now, we’re left wondering. I suppose No Man’s Sky could be free from here on out. Or it could have paid DLC.
