It would be pretty huge for a phone though ... this thing is probably going to have to be the size of the Wii U tablet if not slightly bigger in some ways.
A Tegra X1 is way too hot to run inside a iPhone sized casing too ... even the Nvidia Shield console which is about the size of a Wii U tablet pad still requires an actual fan to actively cool the chip at times.
Maybe they will go with 4G models though because if it runs mobile games, some games may require data but that likely would be just for game purposes not for phone functions.

We just have to wait and see what they reveal. I think it would have to be a 5in screen like the Vita. I have had mobile screens from 4.3in to 5.5in, and I think 5in is the optimal size. The mobile portion could easily be tuned to the point where it runs fine without overheating, while the dock, would be a full powered X2 or whatever. I honestly don't see it being much bigger than a Galaxy Note or Iphone Plus models, even with the button/stick attatchments.
If they have something like this, and it has 4G but no phone function, then they really deserve to fail. There is no excuse for a device like this to not have a phone option in 2017, and no room in the marketplace.

Well I don't think 5-inches really works in terms of the "set it down on the table and play with others" either, that's way too small.
I think the screen needs to be 7-8 inches to be able to comfortably set it down on a table and have 2 people gather around and play together, which I suspect is a central part of the system's appeal.
NX in Nintendo fashion is likely Nintendo's "hope" of bringing people together to play together rather than being zoned off like zombies just staring down at their own personal phone or whatever.
It's a very Nintendo-ey concept.
The chip you would get in a 5-inch phone form factor would suck balls too, that's just the honest truth, you can't really have a great chipset in something that small, and the battery would have to be tiny too. The Apple A9 is about the best mobile chip out there today, and that probably still wouldn't be able to run a game like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, not without running out of battery after like 1 1/2 hours.
It has to be a tablet form factor, a phone size is just unrealistic, maybe one day when they can die shrink to under 10nm, but we are like 3-4 years minimum before that's even remotely a possibility.
The whole reason why Nintendo is likely scoring these Nvidia Tegra chips for dirt cheap is because they are completely unfeasible for phones. Too hot. Even for tablets the Tegra X1 is pushing it. Nvidia can't find any vendors for it, a gaming tablet with a jumbo battery is basically the only type of mass market device that likely would need the grunt power Nvidia has developed.
