Has Bethesda ruined the Fallout series?

Yes 53 52.48%

No 33 32.67%

Its improved it 15 14.85%

Total:101

This is what happens when developers aim for "broader demographics" and the main reason why I absolutely hated the 7th gen, where this philosophy grew into something real.

Yep Fallout NV + fallout 3 > fallout 4.
Its just dumbed down too much, its gone so far from its RPG roots.

No they didn't, they gave it another direction and the results, while imperfect, were pretty enjoyable. The reason why Fallout is a mainstream hit is them, if the new games were like the old, they could be good, of course, but they would be probably pretty niche.

ehhh your logic is flawed.

both Fallout 3 and New Vegas were giant hits for their time, and New Vegas is absolutely NOTHING like Fallout 4. Even Fallout 3 is considerably more "RPG-y" than Fallout 4.

The casuals enjoyed the last gen Fallout games, there was no need to dumb down the series so much. There are like no story effecting decisions in Fallout 4 and is basically JUST shooting now. blagh. I will point out that a big reason that Fallout 4 sold so well is because of the huge gap between the last game and the hype that had built. But the hype BUILT because of the popular modding community online and the massive amount of people who have gotten around to playing New Vegas (and 3 to a lesser extent) on older consoles and PC in the last 10 years.

I would say the goodwill from the last few games more or less is what fueled Fallout 4's success, less so its own pedigree. Its not a bad game but its not a great game, and its reviews (both by fans and critics) are not that great

Again though, Fallout 3 and New Vegas are anything but niche. if you're referring to the original Fallout games being 'niche' then, sure, they're top down isometric games made that way due to the time when they were released....

I think you're missing how much of a detraction Fallout 4 is from 3/New Vegas though. it kills a ton of the RPG elements and the dialogue wheel has become borderline retarded with all options resulting in the same thing

Oh but I was talking about the real old ones, I agree that Fallout 3 and New Vegas are better than 4 in many aspects, but I don't think Fallout 4 has ruined anything.

Fallout 4 was a blast. Much better locations, a lot more content, and superior game-play to FO3/FO:NV. FO:NV had a better main story but wasn't as good a game in most other ways.

Lots of tiny things go either way. For instance, I liked the lever action rifles in FO:NV better but FO4 did a much better job with attachments.

Overall, FO4 is the best game of the three, all things considered. There are dozens and dozens of improvements.

Of course, I'm someone who likes to explore every part of these games and I put hundreds of hours into them. Someone who runs through them in 40 hours like they're standard shooters might think otherwise.

Absolutely ridiculous that Fallout 4 was chosen for GOTY over Witcher 3.

The Witcher 3 - 254 GOTY awards

Fallout 4 - 58 GOTY awards

The Witcher 3 won a whole lot more overall...

I was specifically talking about the D.I.C.E Awards. Guess I shouls have mentioned that lol. That is a nice statistic though.

Sorry I didn't play Fallout 1 or 2. But between Fallout 3, NV and Fallout 4, I think Fallout 4 is the best.

It comes down to freedom, open world, gameplay. I love RPGs, but I do not play Fallout games for old RPG stuff. To me Fallout 4 has the best gameplay and open world out of the three.

When it comes to JRPGs I don't value open world and freedom as much, but I still love them for different values.

It seems playing Fallout 2 dampened your expectations for the Fallout franchise, just as Morrowind makes me dislike Skyrim.

I like this post.

I can't speak about F4 since I haven't played it but being a big fan of the franchise and having played the originals, I completely agree that NV is better than F3 in every way. To me, the problem is that Bethesda seems to be TOO heavy handed with morality in their games. I have no issue with a game giving you the choice to be an evil bastard or a saint, but I do tend to enjoy when the writers are a bit more subtle about it, when it's hard to say with certainty which is the "right choice".

NV has several endings that have a great degree of subtlety in their writing so the "right choice" is really up to you.

I also wanna comment that the ending for F3 is an absolute mess. The fact that the game forces you to die, even with a companion that can resist radiation with no issue!, is just insulting to anyone who is actually paying attention. They were too focused on making a "tragic finale" to realize the massive plot hole staring them in the face. Making you buy a DLC to be able to take the ONLY reasonable choice is also a big slap in the face. Screw Bethesda.

I completed and loved Fallout 3. Any of the later games... Played for like an hour or two and just got bored.

I probably found Fallout 3 so enjoyable probably because it was so fresh at the time, but boy did it age quickly though.

But it let me build this

Wait, was there some kind of urgent struggle going on?

New Vegas was the best imo. I did complete all the story paths in Fallout 4 yet none really let me play it the way I wanted to. New Vegas was far more satisfying story wise. The environmental stories plus building stuff saved Fallout 4. Missions were just a means to collect materials while exploring the environment. Great world building, yet missions were shoot, loot, trade for scrap to build with...

Gathering the huge amount of copper needed to power my Totoro sign kept me going for half the game lol

In the end it was more fun than the witcher 3, which I ended with a huge bank account and nothing to do with it. In F4 I build several towns with all those dead bodies!
