I can't speak about F4 since I haven't played it but being a big fan of the franchise and having played the originals, I completely agree that NV is better than F3 in every way. To me, the problem is that Bethesda seems to be TOO heavy handed with morality in their games. I have no issue with a game giving you the choice to be an evil bastard or a saint, but I do tend to enjoy when the writers are a bit more subtle about it, when it's hard to say with certainty which is the "right choice".

NV has several endings that have a great degree of subtlety in their writing so the "right choice" is really up to you.

I also wanna comment that the ending for F3 is an absolute mess. The fact that the game forces you to die, even with a companion that can resist radiation with no issue!, is just insulting to anyone who is actually paying attention. They were too focused on making a "tragic finale" to realize the massive plot hole staring them in the face. Making you buy a DLC to be able to take the ONLY reasonable choice is also a big slap in the face. Screw Bethesda.
