Forums - General - What is a good pokemon?

I generally like pokemon that look badass or aesthetically pleasing. I really like pokemon like Greninja, Empoleon, Charizard, Lucario, Scizor, and such.

What I don't like are simply just ugly pokemon I don't want to associate with, like most of gen 5 pokemons. Not much of the pokemon really appealed to me barring a couple of pokemon. Like, you seriously think Seismitoad honestly compares to someone like, Gyrados or Swampert? Or Druddington compared to Dragonite/Salamance/Garchomp? Scizor > Bisharp. And then Zekrom and Reshiram look like clusterfuck in design compared to literally any other legendary in other series.

IMO Gen 4 had the best pokemon lineup.

Well, early gen Pokemons were simple by aesthetics, but attractive and creative. Charizard? A fire dragon. Venausaur? A dinosaur plant. Snorlax? A giant fat bear (right?). And well, kids like that. Everyone likes that.

So as time went on, the designs got more complex and out-of-nowhere. Like most gen 5 Pokemon. They're not bad by any means, but just read they're names. They're hard to recognize. Complex. That's not a bad thing inherently, but it's difficult to appreciate.

That's why you see an ugly fish get hate (even though it's meant to look ugly), but a lazy koala get love. Or a dog. Heck, the Kimi-something that got announced today is getting love, even though it's just a lazy excuse to re-use the Pikachu design. It's creative, but simple.

this.

the reality is that they naturally began to run out of unique and aesthetically pleasant new Pokemon designs. The original 150 or whatever cover so many great basics. You have cute cats, bear like creatures, giant stone snakes, fire dragons. They did everything well, from cute to tough looking

obviously at some point they started rehasing them a bit or trying to get creative which turned into a lot of ugly messes.

There are still obviously some awesome new Pokemon but the original 1st gen ones have lasted the test of time because they have such individual unique characteristics and looks.

I mean take like Charmander and Pikachu and Hitmonlee and compare them with practically ANY other three Pokemon from any other gen- its not even close in terms of how much better the 1st gen is. There are so many that have lasted the test of time- Snorlax, Eevee, Bulbosaur, Blastoise, Zapdose, Meowth, Onyx, etc. etc. etc.

can't expect them to continually people able to keep up the creative quality when you only have so many elements and body types.

look at Digimon for example and how crappy almost all of the creatures in that series looks compared to practically any Pok gen. its just very difficult to create new imaginary designs that work in a universe and are aesthetically pleasant but not literally a carbon copy of something else

The original ones were definitely the best by a mile. Any new ones I've seen just look like cheap knock-offs to me

I've never been a stickler for most of the Pokemon's designs. Occasionally I'd find one that looked weird or bad but most have looked fine to me.

Also, many talk about first gen being best gen but that one gave us Voltorb/Electrode which are just Pokeballs with eyes as well as Exeggcute/Exeggcutor which look ridiculous to me. I'd argue evolutions like Dugtrio and Magneton are lazy but Magnezone is pretty cool. I don't like Weezing either: Koffing was cute.

GEN 1 MASTER RACE!!!!!!

A good Pokemon is just one you like the look of... it's purely subjective.

A good pokemon includes go typing, abilities, movesets and STAB, maximum stats and all that other fancy stuff that gives them a competitive edge
