FFVII is, in my opinion, a good deal overrated, but I still loved it at the time.

I think that one is very underrated these days. It's still a fantastic game design, even by todays standards. It's just behind on visual tech due to the time of its development.
Today, Final Fantasy 9 is the game in the FF franchise that is massively overrated.

First, as my avatar might suggest, I disagree whole-heartedly with the bolded part lol... there is positively zero chance the world would have reacted to the news of a "remastering" of FFIX anywhere near to the degree that they did FFVII. The hype for FFVII has never really died down, but I suspect most people haven't gone back and tried playing it again.

Otherwise, the visuals of FFVII are the thing I'm actually most impressed with; they made the jump from 2D to 3D about as well as any franchise, alongside Mario and Zelda. It is that fact, in my opinion, that garnered it such praise, as it was the first 3D RPG that many people got to experience and they were blown away by it. If you go back and play it today, though, I think most would find it hasn't aged well... not sure there's ever been a game with more forced minigames than this one lol

Still, it's a good game. I just listed it because it's one of the most hyped games in history, and I'm not sure it completely warrants that level of praise... but I still enjoyed it.

lol I'm noticing these answers are really mostly "Name great games that you enjoyed".

MGSV
Evil Within
Fallout 3/4

Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time are the 2 that come to my mind, immediately.

Halo. It was an ok shooter, but I never understood why people hyped it to death. It was fun, but nowhere near GOTY or best shooter ever or something like that.

Majora's Mask (to some degree I liked it)
OoT
FF6
Uncharted 2 and 4
MGSV (man, if only the story had a little more to it)

Evil Within

As someone who loved The Evil Within all the way through, beaten it several times, and considers it 2014's best game, can't agree with the notion that it is overrated; if anything, underrated from my perspective. The game didn't got universal acclaim, didn't won any awards and it barely got 75 on metacritic (any new review would have thrown it into yellow territory), plus a lot of people has shown disappointment in this Mikami game. This example here is far, far from being overrated.

So just good games whose greatness is exaggerated? There are dozens.

Metal Gear Solid 4 - it was on its way to greatness, then got bogged down in an obscene cutscene-to-gameplay ratio

Pokemon Red/Blue - full of charm and hugely influential, but never achieves greatness

Uncharted 2 - the pinnacle of Uncharted, yes, but not the all time great it's sometimes assumed to be. It's not even the best game of 2009. Heck it's not even the best PS3 game of 2009.

Uncharted 4 - an excellent game let down in some spots by scripted sequences and overlong cutscenes

The Last of Us - a stellar game that deserves a lot of love and recognition, but not any greatest-of-all-time awards

Inside - a haunting, atmospheric puzzle platformer with a bunch of inflated scores

Portal - an ingenious puzzle game that pales in comparison to its younger brother Portal 2

Doom (2016) - a fun old-school shooter with an uneven campaign and boring multiplayer

Bastion - a colorful and creative action RPG that loses points for repetition and a focus on storytelling

That's just a sampling.

I suppose I can't come up with too many I have played, I'm pretty careful with my purchases. I suppose I can stick in Empire Total War. A curious one though, it is overrated like mad on the critic end but underrated I think on the player end. But I still quite enjoyed it, the naval battles were really really cool.
