Forums - Politics - For those who support the death penalty

I just look at the rampant corruption and widespread criminality in my country and I know we need the Death Penalty back.

Drug Lords turn our prisons into mansions and professional killers can freely leave because some corrupt official has a job for them, they just go back to jail once the job is finished. We also have a terrorist group who is tied with ISIS and their number 1 business is kidnapping. No ransom = beheaded.

Complete and total breakdown of the justice system. So if we can't punish them in prison, may as well kill them off.

Which country?

Death penalty isn't meant to be a deterrent ...

It's meant to rid of scums like Eagle said ...

Mass murderers, terrorists, and mass manslaughter only deserve death in my eyes and they don't deserve a painless one either ...

I feel for you here in Pakistan also a lot of corruption and effectively the equivalent of Mafias call themselves political parties and wreak havoc in our largest city and there is gang violence as well and we also have terrorists and in my province even the corrupt military kills the people of our province. We do have death penalty but there is gross misuse of the punishment and the real crooks are wealthy and even inside the political legal and military system as well as intelligence system

I could support the death penalty for Mass murderers, Mass rapists, Serial Killers and pedophiles. For other crimes I don't see the death penalty as fitting.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

I believe in it. However, it should only be given out to those who have been proven with 100% certainty to be the ones who committed their awful crimes. It should also be quick. There are some who have been in Death Row for over a decade who are STILL awaiting their execution which crimes? Mostly the ones outlined by others here already

Australia doesn't have the Death Penalty... And it works for us, so I will back it all the way... And going by the USA's jail rate, it hasn't worked as a deterrent anyway.
Not only that, but sometimes you get false convictions turned over decades after someone was put to death thanks to new evidence, it's one of the reasons why Australia abolished the Death Penalty to start with.

Besides... To me they should be put to work in order to better society and pay for their crimes as free labor while they are in Jail, seems a waste to simply kill them off in my opinion.

It doesn't work in the US because it's not used in all states or very often.

Do you think you can force those people to work? Nah, they'll be a waste of money. And we're lucky in Australia because we have a low population.

When do you think people should be killed? Are there certain guidelines you have in mind for when a person should be killed?

Only when one is an imminent threat to the safety of others can/should one be killed. Therefore the death penalty is immoral. Considering the number of falsely accused prisoners, I find no solace in even one innocent person dieing if a hundred guilty are killed. Life in prison is also cheaper due to the nature of appeals.

This might sound strange to some but I am against the death penalty at the state level but for it at the federal level.

I have no moral objection of killing someone who committed a heinous crime such as cold blooded murder. I do have 2 requirements through for me to support the death penalty.

1) I must be 100% certain the person is guilty. There cant even be a .0001 percent chance of killing someone innocent.

2) Your economic class should not affect whether you live or die.

I can find cases at the state level where I have my doubts about the guilt of the person who receive the death penalty. I defiantly think at the state level there been cases where the quality of the lawyer someone could afford have affected the outcome.

On the other hand because Federal cases are super high profile I am certain of the guilt of everyone who gotten the death penalty at the federal level (at least in my lifetime). Also because federal cases are so high profile there are always extremely well respected lawyers assign to defend the accuse whether they have money or not.

For example Judy Clarke represented dzhokhar tsarnaev. Judy Clarke is an well respected lawyer.

On the state level I have no confidence that a system can be put in place that would meet my 2 requirements therefore I would ban it at the state level.

Some prisons in Australia already do have their Prison population work, I know mine does, they farm crops, allot of that food is given to the poor, homeless, charity. etc'.
The way it should be.

Population really doesn't have much to do with it, standard of living is a *massive* factor in crime rates, especially in regards to health, income, jobs, opportunities etc'.
Plus we have an effective gun-control system, that has worked extremely well.

And I quote: "In October 2013, the incarceration rate of the United States of America was the highest in the world, at 716 per 100,000 of the national population.
While the United States represents about 4.4 percent of the world's population, it houses around 22 percent of the world's prisoners."

In other words, the Death Penalty has not worked has it?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_incarceration_rate

Australia by comparison has an incarceration
rate of 205 prisoners per 100,000 of the national population. - We don't have the death penalty.
