This might sound strange to some but I am against the death penalty at the state level but for it at the federal level.
I have no moral objection of killing someone who committed a heinous crime such as cold blooded murder. I do have 2 requirements through for me to support the death penalty.
1) I must be 100% certain the person is guilty. There cant even be a .0001 percent chance of killing someone innocent.
2) Your economic class should not affect whether you live or die.
I can find cases at the state level where I have my doubts about the guilt of the person who receive the death penalty. I defiantly think at the state level there been cases where the quality of the lawyer someone could afford have affected the outcome.
On the other hand because Federal cases are super high profile I am certain of the guilt of everyone who gotten the death penalty at the federal level (at least in my lifetime). Also because federal cases are so high profile there are always extremely well respected lawyers assign to defend the accuse whether they have money or not.
For example Judy Clarke represented dzhokhar tsarnaev. Judy Clarke is an well respected lawyer.
On the state level I have no confidence that a system can be put in place that would meet my 2 requirements therefore I would ban it at the state level.
