Forums - Sony - Digital Foundry - Several sources indicate Neo will launch this year

If they're going with the leaked specs and not upgrading to compete with Scorpio, getting it out this year will be important to get a good head start. Arriving up to a year earlier and $100+ cheaper would put them in good position despite the power difference.

Well that's kinda fucked up for fans to launch it with a short notice.

If its specs are going to be vastly inferior to Scorpio, sooner is better.

If true, the Scorpio has even less of a chance. If Sony can launch this year, at $399, with ~5-5.5Tflops, it won't even be a contest. Hell, they may even drop the price to $349 in anticipation of the Scorpio next Holiday season. My guess is a Gamescom announcement.

Ye if Sony releases on October at 399 when the Scorpio comes well be looking at a 2.3 or so x 1 lead by the basic PS4 and a bunch of Neos (not sure how well they will sell, but Im asuming less so than the basic Ps4) x the Scorpio. Even if MS manages ot match the 399 price all Sony has to do is anounce a 50$ price cut on the Neo the day after MS anounces their price.

This is interesting news. What if the 1st party games shown at Sony's E3 conference were all running on NEO hardware? I mean, it would be mad of Sony to not let their own Developers get an early crack at new hardware, this thing needs to come out with the software to show the value.

Digital foundry ran a frame rate test on God of War, and even though people thought it was a little slow, it was at 1080p, and running well over 30fps. I think it never dropped lower than 35 on their test. Which means with optimization this thing will more than likely hit the 60 fps mark.

Supposedly all on standard PS4's.

Sony have to because if they dont. MS will dominate the 4k market with there affordable Slim model.

Im glad MS told there customers and future customers there plans. This doesnt lead to disapointment. I would hate to be that guy who buys a brand new machine only to realise that a bigger and better improved model came out a month later.

I also highly doubt that the Neo will be a $399 console, not if the Slim is roughly around the same price bracket using the same Hardware as before. Unless Sony plan on losing profits on system sales.

If the Neo arrives this year it will be competing against the vastly cheaper X1S which would be more appealing to budget gamers and 4k owners. The Scorpio will not have a rival if its a complete year away.

Ill wait and see.

That's impressive. I just got through with Uncharted 4. Honestly, I think GOW looks much better. The detail in the damage animations were mindblowing. when he started punching that one enemy in the beginning, and broke his jaw. anf the damage on the giant's leg.

I know Idiffer with most, but I am not excited to run around with a companion (son) in the new GOW, most of the Uncharted 4 was like that, and I really thought it slowed tha game down too much for my liking. Towards the end, when you go solo,is when I had the most fun personally.

Thats what i am wondering too. My guess is that there shold be a tangible difference. We can see a differemce between native 1080p and 900p upscaled to  1080p. And the difference between 900p and 1080p is just around a 50% bump in pixels. The difference between 1080p and 4k is around a 4 times bump in pixel count.

But sony probably has test units testing just this, do they feel that with whatever upscaling tech they are using it will be a enough to make it just as good or passable? Cause unless they see no value in putting native 4k level hardware into a box then i see no reason why they will be set on doing what they are seemingly doimg now.

Hopefully someone with more tech knowledge can shed some light on this.

It'll be notable, but the extent of which will really be dependant on TV size and distance. We have to remember that most 4k Tvs are only 55", the reality is native 4k versus 1080p is only going to be a big leap when sitting within around 7feet of that size TV set. 1080p is the point of diminishing returns going beyond that, not to say high resolutions won't visible but less obvious than 720p versus 1080p. I don't think Sony are too worried.

Also If Scorpio strives for native 4k, what room would it have for actual graphical improvements? Neo would easily have the better looking games in such a situation.

Kratos is probably the highest fidelity in-game character model I've seen, but Uncharted 4 was at least as much about the little details, animation, and a heap of physics as it was the broader image. Too early to know how the rest of the game and final code will compare, though Santa Monica are certainly tech wizards themselves. Particularly excited (technically) about the absence of cuts, providing true seamlessness between story and gameplay moments and suggesting a full 'real time all the time' mantra. A little apprehensive about the son tagging along all the time myself, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and it could be cool to watch a boy turn into a warrior right in front of your eyes.

If neo releases this year, I dont sre it being more than $399. Thats what the original PS4 launched at 3yrs ago.

And this thing you are saying about Neo competing with the XBOs? Thats just flat out wrong. The XBOs will be coming in at $299, its competing with the Base PS4 (which mind you is still even smaller than it), and the XB1 has been cheaper than the PS4 since sometime in 2014, That has never resulted to it selling better than the PS4. Why do you think an XBOs will suddenly start outselling the core PS4 all of a sudden?

The neo arriving this year means its not competing with anyone. And when the scorpio arrives next year, make no mistake it will be competing with the Neo, and then the Neo could be priced as low as $350/$300 to the scorpios $500 (likely the price cause the scorpio is noy just getting a bigger GPU its getting more Ram too).

And about the buying this month then new hardware releasing next month, thats only messed up if the new hardware is cheaper or better but at the same price. If i spend $299 this month cause that was what i could afford, then a newer model of my console comes out at $399 it makes no difference to me.
