Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie on NX: "For us it's not about specs"

I dont get it, do some people actually think Nintendo with NX would compete with Xbox Scorpio specs, and release console with price around $500, in middle of generation!? NX in that case hardly would pass evene 10m LT.

For me its very obvious that Nintendo with NX is aming affordable 1080p console with some new concept, it will definitely not run games in 4k.

I doubt NX will even be able to run PS4 games in 1080P. Probably more like souped up Wii U tier games will run in 1080P with added effects. PS4/XB1 ports probably at 720p, I don't think Nintendo really cares about that.

Take the new Zelda, double the pixels (that takes you from 720p-1080p), bump the frame rate to a rock solid 30 fps at least (the current build has some drops), add some higher resolution textures, more detailed foliage thanks to an added poly count, better lighting/shader effects ... and that's probably NX.

Which wouldn't be *that* bad honestly. If you let the whole "Nintendo must be the market leader and have third parties!" dream die, Wii U games for *Nintendo's* POV already look pretty nice, triple or quadruple the horsepower and RAM and you probably have the roof of what Nintendo would ever even want to spend developing any game to begin with.

I expecting power somewhere between XB1 and PS4, in best case little above PS4 power.

That is enough for 1080p/60fps for Nintendo games, and at least 900p for 3rd party games. I relly dont see NX will be less poferfule than XB1 in any case and we know XB1 have some 720p and some 1080p games, but most of XB1 games are 900p.

I also think Nintendo will care this time about 3rd party, I dont think they will again want to have worst looking and worst running 3rd party games, they know they need 3rd party.

If the NX is slower then the current gen (not neo or scorpio) I will just seriously lose all interest in the console

I think that's what you should expect. The NX will most likely sell very bad and even if it becomes a success, it's unlikely that it will get any significant third party support outside of Japan, which was even the case with the Wii. The NX will probably just be another underpowered and immature hybrid console; something like the Virtual Boy where they can't decide whether they want to call it a stationary console or a portable console, but the NX will probably even have a narrower audience than the Gamecube and even the Virtual Boy, games like Teleroboxer or Faceball isn't something we should expect. The NX is dead on arrival.

Thats the biggest issue for me, if its weacker then the Xbox one, all third party are going to dismiss it.... which meens you don't get enough games, you cannot convince any friends to play on it, games that seem fun like mario kart you and mario party you will be playing alone except on rare occasions you have friends coming over, one big wii u mess for me, not ever buying into that again

I'm expecting 1 TFLOP + 4GB RAM for the console @ 20 watts power consumption, which then means the portable can be scaled to 250 GFLOPS @ 5 watts (1/4th exactly). That wouldn't be so bad.

Though part of me is saying it will be even lower than that, which stings. I really, really hope they don't go fucking totally bat shit crazy and do the Wii again by just upclocking the Wii U chip very moderately.

You never know with Nintendo.

If they just want to focus on content why not get out of the hardware biz, they would shift a hell of alot more content that way

True.

But what's Reggie supposed to say? Sorry, the competition is blowing us away with hardware, but we cant keep up. Because we would like to sell inferior hardware at elevated prices to earn the maximum profit.

Well he should give us some good reason why were having to buy Nintendo hardware just to play Nintendo games, somekind of hardware innovation, power is not the be all and end all, but there needs to be something.

Nintendo doesn't have to have the strongest consoles but they should have them so strong that games from third party devs will run easily on it. Like with XBO and PS4, XBO isn't as strong but PS4 games still run on it.

If their machines are so weak that the same games won't run on it or only with heavy optimization it is a mistake.

I think Nintendo fans are also totally fine to get a normal controller and don't need something fancy just to be different.

Because Nintendo games are designed around Nintendos innovation. Thats why Nintendo consoles always offer different controls. Sony and Xbox focus on the same designs which leads to less innovative games while Nintendo try to break open the 4th wall. Nintendos hardware is as important as the games them selves. Without Nintendos hardware to compliment there games then you might aswell not play Nintendo games. (Hello Sega)

because you cant play games like Mario Kart, Smash Bros etc on dfferent systems...right

The point went right over your head. Games like Mario Galaxies were inpired by the mechanics of the Wii. With innovation comes newer ideas. Sure you can play Mario Galaxies with a standard controller however would Mario Galaxies even exist if the Wii never made it into production? Nintendo try new things all the time. There games inspire new controls. eg: Mario 64 Inpired the analoged sticks. Its part of Nintendo's evolution of games. Why do you think Nintendo games are some of the best in the business? Because they may be sequals, however they play totally different to the last. They keep there franchises fresh and new. Thats why there still around today.

If Nintendo games came to PS4 and XB1 then expect the same old games all the time, Mario 10 will be no different to Mario 9 apart from visuals, Mario Kart 12 will be no different to Mario Kart 11 apart from the visual. See the point.

Well at least he was honest. Hopefully it will be focused mainly on games and not gimmicks. It is very clear Nintendo are not interested in insanely high horsepower and stopped being interested after the Gamecube. However, this will hinder third party support right off the bat especially if we start seeing Neo/Scorpio only titles which make full use of those consoles power. If the NX is close/more powerful than the standard PS4/Xbox One, than third party support might be obtainable this time around....

Just gimme 1 TFLOP for the console Nintendo, that's not asking for a lot.

If it's lower than that, seriously, fuck off, I'm tired of having to settle for tech that is almost a decade behind everyone else.

You can do whatever batshit crazy controller you want, just give me at least some reasonable upgrade from the Wii U tech-wise.

Can I predict that Nintendo will continue being excluded by most third party games again?
