Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie on NX: "For us it's not about specs"

That's exactly what Yamauchi used to say...you can see that in the quote I linked above.

We have a brand new Nintendo president in charge but he seems hellbent on continuing Iwata's "it's not about the specs" nonsense even though that's what precisely led to the failed Wii U.

I don't understand why Nintendo would repeat the same failed strategy again instead of returning to a more Yamauchi-esque strategy like back in the glory days. It's like Nintendo is asking to go third-party.

But being all about specs lead to the failure that was the Gamecube though. Only when Nintendo did something different did they pull out way ahead.

Point is I highly doubt that Nintendo want to get into this arms race between MS and Sony draining money into R&D for new console refreshes every few years.

If Nintendo truly wants to survive, they are going to have to go 3rd party.  Most of casuals that the Wii appealed to are gone.  They have gone to tablets or smartphones.  It's also the reason that we went from a handheld market that had room for 2 competitors to do very well (82M and 154M) to one that can only support one doing poorly and one moderatly well (Vita will probably be 15M, while 3DS ends at 65M-70M.)  What are left is a large group of core gamers.  Gamers that want a generational leap in HW, something Nintendo just seems unwillingly to spend the money on, instead aiming for controller gimmicks that mostly appeal to casuals.

And while core gamers still enjoy Nintendo games, they don't appeal to them enough to make them want to purchase outdated HW compared to the systems they already own.  The Wii U has proven that there are a shrinking number of Nintendo diehards who will buy one of their consoles.  The NX is just going to continue to prove that point.  Especially since Reggie is basically confirming the specs aren't going to be anything above the OG PS4, which rumors have already pointed to this, and the fact that the first 3rd party game announced for the NX was...Just Dance 2017.  Looking like more poor 3rd party support for the NX.

Eh I'm not too keen on the 3rd party route. I feel as though one of Nintendo's strengths comes from their ability to know the hardware they make games for inside out. And yes the Wii audience has moved to mobile devices thats why they're moving into that field. Also from what Ive heard on GAF and whatnot, when Reggie made that quote he was probably talking about the Neo and Scorpio. Makes sense given that we just found out about these devices not that long ago and we've known about NX for alot longer.

Lol at the so called "Wii audience". The most overrated console of all time.

I see people say this alot but I think it is the opposite, diehards arent decreasing, its the non-diehards that are decreasing. The reason I say this is because the 1st party software sales from 3DS+Wii U have not had a drastic decrease when compared to GBA+GC.

Its hard to say that diehard Nintendo fans are decreasing when their software sales are pretty stable.

If they just want to focus on content why not get out of the hardware biz, they would shift a hell of alot more content that way

Wisest comment ever. If they dont want to be specs hogs, then they should become just developers, so they can squeeze out all their great creativity in powerful consoles... Leaving the HW development to real hardware developers.

"We all make choices, but in the end, our choices make us" - Andrew Ryan, Bioshock.

They are doing it all over again... The days of making but loads of money on the hardware is gone.. The wii audience is on mobile now the rest cares about graphics so they should aswell. If they insist pleasing everyone and Noone, then it will be a repeat of wii u.

Nintendo has a real opportunity here to get ahead enough in terms of visuals to sell a lot of consoles as the ps4/xbox ages.. If they are gonna be on parov or just slightly better, then they will have an a outdated console in only half a gen.

Only few companies can dictate the market instead of adapting to it, and nintendo isn't one of those companies. At least no longer

Have they though? Recently? because if we look its not like they are doing alot with the HW anyway. How much of the Wii U library really uses the gamepad? Last game that did was Star Fox and that was divisive.
