They are doing it all over again... The days of making but loads of money on the hardware is gone.. The wii audience is on mobile now the rest cares about graphics so they should aswell. If they insist pleasing everyone and Noone, then it will be a repeat of wii u.
Nintendo has a real opportunity here to get ahead enough in terms of visuals to sell a lot of consoles as the ps4/xbox ages.. If they are gonna be on parov or just slightly better, then they will have an a outdated console in only half a gen.
Only few companies can dictate the market instead of adapting to it, and nintendo isn't one of those companies. At least no longer
