That's exactly what Yamauchi used to say...you can see that in the quote I linked above.

We have a brand new Nintendo president in charge but he seems hellbent on continuing Iwata's "it's not about the specs" nonsense even though that's what precisely led to the failed Wii U.

I don't understand why Nintendo would repeat the same failed strategy again instead of returning to a more Yamauchi-esque strategy like back in the glory days. It's like Nintendo is asking to go third-party.

But being all about specs lead to the failure that was the Gamecube though. Only when Nintendo did something different did they pull out way ahead.

Point is I highly doubt that Nintendo want to get into this arms race between MS and Sony draining money into R&D for new console refreshes every few years.

If Nintendo truly wants to survive, they are going to have to go 3rd party.  Most of casuals that the Wii appealed to are gone.  They have gone to tablets or smartphones.  It's also the reason that we went from a handheld market that had room for 2 competitors to do very well (82M and 154M) to one that can only support one doing poorly and one moderatly well (Vita will probably be 15M, while 3DS ends at 65M-70M.)  What are left is a large group of core gamers.  Gamers that want a generational leap in HW, something Nintendo just seems unwillingly to spend the money on, instead aiming for controller gimmicks that mostly appeal to casuals.

And while core gamers still enjoy Nintendo games, they don't appeal to them enough to make them want to purchase outdated HW compared to the systems they already own.  The Wii U has proven that there are a shrinking number of Nintendo diehards who will buy one of their consoles.  The NX is just going to continue to prove that point.  Especially since Reggie is basically confirming the specs aren't going to be anything above the OG PS4, which rumors have already pointed to this, and the fact that the first 3rd party game announced for the NX was...Just Dance 2017.  Looking like more poor 3rd party support for the NX.
