The earlier leaked specs suggested the NEO would use the same CPU as the original but clocked at 2.0ghz instead of 1.6ghz.

I thought the rumors where Puma+ cores instead of the jaguar ones.

Still weak small cores, but minor upgrade.

Looks like I got it slightly wrong.

According to the report, which Giant Bomb says has been confirmed by a number of unidentified sources, the new console has received the internal codename ‘NEO’ and will feature a CPU with 8 Jaguar Cores at 2.1 GHz (compared to the original PS4’s 1.6 GHz), an improved GPU (AMD GCN, 36 CUs at 911 MHz compared the original’s 18 CUs at 800 MHz) and improved RAM (8 GB GDDR5, 218 GB/s compared to the original’s 176 GB/s).

This is the only specs leak I am aware of, and it seems to be supported by a lot of different people.

Not so simple, it depends on the game. The XBO has the same CPU as the PS4 clocked at 1.8ghz instead of ps4's 1.6ghz, by that logic the XBO should have higher framerate than the PS4, However in almost all instances it is the PS4 version of games with the better and more consistent frame rate even though it has a weaker CPU. So we can come to the conclusion that in the majority of console games it is infact NOT the CPU that is limiting the framerate.

The earlier leaked specs suggested the NEO would use the same CPU as the original but clocked at 2.0ghz instead of 1.6ghz.

Mind that these are generally small differences. Like PS4 at stable 30 fps and X1 with drops to 26 or something. And in a lot of these cases, companies are pushing for similar or equal resolution and that will make the X1 struggle more. 900p vs 1080p has been a sweet spot for multiplats because this difference in pixel count is roughly the same power difference for the GPUs.

Now 30 vs 60 is a way, way bigger problem. You have to halve frame render time. It's not like we are seeing games running at 60 x 30 or 30 x 15 when talking PS4 and X1.

As they are pushing for parity, it's reasonable to have a CPU that's only a bit better. Upgrading the GPU will allow higher res and better effects but without making the regular model look far behind. Remember, they won't stop selling the regular version. You can count on a price cut or even a slim model.

Last gen, they suffered with extremely outdated consoles in the final years. It's impossible to make it cheap and powerful at the same time. So now they will have a cheap model, that runs all the games and is affordable, and a premium one, to make power users happy.

I can't wait to pick this up. Hopefully FFXV is built for Neo at launch.

It won't be 60 fps. It will need a better CPU to achieve that. As they are basically just upgrading the GPU, you can count on higher res, more effects, better lightning. The fps will probably just be a bit more stable because of the marginally higher CPU clock + GPU.

So we can come to the conclusion that in the majority of console games it is infact NOT the CPU that is limiting the framerate, so framerate gains from the NEO may be bigger than you expect.

The earlier leaked specs suggested the NEO would use the same CPU as the original but clocked at 2.0ghz instead of 1.6ghz.

Exactly, as in most modern games being GPU bound, the FPS will depend on GPU, not in CPU. It could be a different story for legacy games made to take advantage of single core processors like 15 years ago or more

Soo it wont be a big 5.5tflops upgrade and will fall verry behind the nx and scorpio?

I don't know if they will be Jaguar cores and the rumour doesn't clarify it. They could be Puma+ cores aiming for a bit higher performance. It's more likely that they will pair these two instead of using older tech for the CPU and newer for the GPU.

Besides that, AMD will probably push a Puma+/Polaris 10 APU to the market, trying to use DX12 to compensate the limited CPU punch and creating a low cost gaming solution.

If those leaks are accurate the NEO will have around a 4.2tflop gpu compared to the 1.84tflop of the original, not sure where you got any NX or Scorpio specs from that are as convincing as the NEO rumour that was backed up by multiple different people and sites.

behind the NX? are you for real? lol

the NX is about to output anything from 1.3 to 2.2 TFLOPS, that was how wide the rumors had it

That's great news. I hope Sony reveals the Neo at E3.

lol wasnt i telling it days ago when i saw the APUs? Now you hear it from DF, lol and i am not even a pc gamer anymore.

Yeah i hope Sony aims for the Polaris architecture and decides to beef up the specs in the last minute,

They should increase clockspeed, ram and ram mhz.

The Neo could be the bargain of the decade with having the latest amd gpu (200$) and a 4k (500$) blueray player

Unless I am mistaken... I don't think anyone doubted it wasn't going to be that a few days ago... We just had people doubt that its going to be running at full 480 clock speeds which is still yet to be proven for obvious reasons...

PS: If it's the thread we are thinking of, I was the first one that suggested it :P http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=7921263

But having less Mhz isnt that much of a difference, stream processors are. There are various Graphicscards from different companies of the same AMD GPU with higher clock speeds than orginally intended by AMD, yet the difference is quite small in performance.

Also Sony could easily decide to increase the clockspeed in the last minute, just like they increased the GDDR5 ram from 4 to 8 Gigs for the original PS4.
