All I am reading for the most part is personal interpretations/revisions of what individuals now see the goal as.
What I see as what MS have proven:
- can retain legacy market from last product - can increase the introductory price of consoles
What hasn't been proven: - increased marketshare outside legacy market from last product - mass market appeal

While the marketshare hasn't increased by an enormous amount, without a doubt it has increased:

The 360 is charting ~3.5-4m ahead of the Xbox at this point in its life. Its sales numbers after ~2 1/3 years are right around the same numbers for the Xbox after ~3 years - and the Xbox was well into the holiday 2004 season and the obvious sales uptick from Nov-Dec.
So, the 360 is charting about 7 months in front of the Xbox. By the end of 2008, I think it will chart anywhere from 11-13 months ahead of the Xbox in the same timespan. Given the likelyhood of the 360 lasting at least one year longer than the Xbox - and its pathetic four year lifespan - and the price difference between the 2004 Xbox and the 2008 360 ($149.99 Xbox vs. 279/349 360 Pro depending on region), things aren't that bad for MS. The 360 is also charting higher than the Xbox in all three major regions.
In short, marketshare has been gained. All this and I didn't even touch on the profitability of the Xbox vs. 360...
