As loathe as I am to admit it, they probably do need a gimmick now. They can't compete head on with Sony/MS.
However if the gimmick isn't something amazing, they are then pretty much fucked because like the Wii U they will be stuck with an underpowered console that has very little marketshare.
They've said this is not a continuation of the Wii or Wii U brands, so we'll see what they've come up with I guess. I'm not really holding my breath.
I think when you are trying to force innovation you end up with poor products.
