PlayStation Europe Exec on PS4 Neo: “It’s Normal to Think of its Update;” Welcomes the Nintendo NX

Sony has been very silent about the rumored PS4K or PS4 Neo, but Sony Computer Entertainment Vice-President for Southern Europe Philippe Cardon was slightly more forthcoming during an interview on Challenges.

“PS4 has been developed to be compatible with VR, but within the life of a console research and development teams are still working on improvements. The current PS4 dates back multiple years. It’s normal to think of it’s update. However, I have no more information than that to provide.”

While this is far from an official (or even unofficial) confirmation, at least Cardon did not hide behind the “no comment” wall as Sony has done since the first rumors emerged from GDC 2016. We’ll see if the rumors will solidify, and even more importantly how they will solidify. For the moment, this is all we get.

Incidentally, Cardon also mentioned that the console market has “everything to gain” with the return of Nintendo with the NX.

“I don’t know about a generation 8-2. Information about the hardware does not filter from Japan. What I can tell you for now is that we’re currently in an extremely dynamic market, but currently based on two consoles and not three. The market has everything to gain from the return of Nintendo. With three consoles, the market is stronger.”

Honestly, good on him for being honest, a bit PRish, but mostly honest. If only half this site can learn from him.

Yeh, so it is basically happening. "The current PS4" and the general non-dismissive tone of the notion of the PS4 Neo pretty much confirm it.

They interview a exec, and ask him lots of questsions about games....
But the intresting part is that he "welcomes the NX" ?

I don't agree with his statement about three systems in the market, there is clearly only room for two in the core console market. Alway's has been that way.

Last generation?

i think you missed the part I bolded in his post. I wanna believe that that's the qualifier of his argument.

And I agree. The core console market isn't big enough for 3 players. Especially when you consider that 95% of all games made would typically be released on all consoles. This of course is assuming Nintendo can finally get third parties behind them.

I don't even think it's big enough for two.... but the competition is needed to keep companies honest. If it were left to Sony, we would be paying for $1000+ consoles and probably have a very very dated network infrastructure. If it were left to MS, we would not be using discs anymore and/or not able to buy or play used games. If it were left to Nintendo.... well, thrid parties wouldn't exist. unless bibtedno says it's OK to.

Very well said.

I think Nintendo actually did a great job handling both core and casual with the Wii. It could have done more, and third party could have cared a bit more, but I think I would not dismise it as a core console.  At the end of the day, all three consoles last generations did fine, some not financially great, but still fine.

Only Xbox 360 and PS3 were succesfull in the core gaming market, Wii sold primarily to casuals. Wii created it's own market really, though it dissappeared very quickly aswell.
