The fact that so many people argued whether the Wii U was 7th gen or 8th gen, and are now arguing whether the NX is 8th or 9th gen just proves that the lines between console generations are already getting blurred.

Standard console generations are over. Deal with it.

And the GC came out 2 years after the PS2 - did people argue that console generations were dead back then too? And just because some people are arguing about it doesn't make it true.

I think there will be a physical PS5/XB2 ... but it will also start to become optional by next gen whether or not you want to own hardware or not.

There won't be a PS6/XB3/NX3 or whatever, upgradable or not because 1 gigabit internet will be standard by then and games will be able to be streamed even in 4K+ resolution.

If Netflix decides for example to offer a gaming service where you can buy whatever game you want, but you don't have to pay $400 for the hardware, and you can run games on high effects that evolve over time ... the Sony/Nintendo/MS model is going to look really, really badly outdated, but Sony is already test driving this idea with PS Now.

Really ?, 1GBs Internet ?,  where i live you need a Internet of 5GBs, to get a 500MBs, PS5, would launch in 2019-2020, PS6, 2025-2026, i don't think that in 10 Years the World will have such Internet, maybe in Korea.

Korea's Average Internet Speed, is 21.0Mbit/s, is the Faster internet in the World, the seccond best internet is the Japanese internet connection, and is 12,9Mbit/s, USA, Average is 10.00Mbit/s.

The World's Average is 3.84Mbit/s, how the Average will became 100 Times better for USA, and 250-300 Times Better Worldwide, in just 10 Years ?.

Your just supporting my view. And the Dreamcast came out during gen 5 but is regarded as a gen 6 console. The GameCube came out one year after the PS2 in 2001, not two years after.

The point is console generations have never been clear cut, and now that we are getting mid gen upgrades, console generations mean nothing.

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

we are well past that point. there will be a new controller, vastly upgraded hardware, and new exclusive content. its a new console, and its gen 9

Its launching in the middle of 8th gen. Mid gen

thats... thats not how generations work. if a new series of something comes out, that marks the start of a new generation. cell phones change generations nearly every year. time does not matter

That is how a generation works. The definition of a generation is people existing at the same time. As for electronics it's how they exist at the same time. For phone they launch every two years but when they do the new iPhone and new galaxy launches. For the NX it's launching with the ps4 neo and xb1.5 and not  Xbox 2 or ps5 so its a mid gen console. I'll consider it a 9th gen if sony or MS release ps5 or xb2 this or next year.

Dreamcast as considered gen 6 because Saturn was gen 5. Which is why despite more than 2 years difference between the Saturn and the GC, they're all one gen. And it's more than 1 year between the PS2 and GC release - about 20 months.

I'm not sure at all the industry is ready to such a radical change so soon. Sure, there would be pros, but cons too, as generations provide a stable platform for a number of years allowing some savings and easier planning.

Fiber Optic is spreading rapidly beginning this year, but even with existing cable infastructure companies like Comcast are utilizing new technology like DOCSIS 3.1 modems to enable 1 gigabit internet.

No one had broadband cirica 1997/98, but everyone had it by 2007/08.

The US, Japan, UK/France/Germany are the key markets, once ultra high speed spreads there, I think console makers will begin to offer console-free options for people who don't want to pay for the console itself, and eventually the console box itself will be phased out.

Change something Non-existent, to existent, is different to make it 100 Times better than the previous, with Dozens of countries that will not be able to do it for the next Decades, and even the  biggest ones, will struggle to get such a thing, it Took more than Half century to make HD, as the Standart, and still places that don't have HD Tv, as a Standart.
