I totally agree with all of that, and I love playing God of War so much. One game I think that you could have added to your list possibly at least is Resident Evil, or Resident Evil, because those helped create a spark, and innovation into the horror genre, and it helped create a new aspect to some of the mechanics.

Totally agree. RE3 was chosen as my personal favorite from the series RE, Portal, Metroid Prime... my god the list could go on

That is true, there is so much length that can go into a list like this. I could spend countless hours writing down, or researching games that helped innovate gaming.

Super Mario Bros. 3. It's the perfect platformer. It took everything about the original SMB, itself a revolutionary and amazing game, and made it better. The expanded roster of enemies and selection of power-ups, new types of blocks that changed how the game played, and advancements in level design, combined with precise controls and impeccable art design that made the best of the NES's limitations and offered a bright, colorful new Mushroom Kingdom filled with myriad environments from desert to snow and everything in between. Honestly, the only thing bad about the game in retrospect is that you can't revisit levels you've already completed without restarting the game. When that's the only drawback to a game, you know you have yourself a masterpiece. I can honestly say that no other game has brought me such fun and enjoyment as SMB3.

SMB3 to this day is to me the pinnacle of both its franchise and its genre, and while future 2D Mario games were amazing themselves, none of them was quite as good as SMB3. It was also the first game to have a truly massive amount of hype behind it. It had a huge ad campaign, tons of coverage in Nintendo Power, and was even revealed to Western audiences for the first time in the climax of the movie/100-minute-long Nintendo commercial The Wizard. Having sold over 17 million copies, it was by far the best-selling console game ever not originally bundled with a system, and it would hold that record for over a decade later until it was finally dethroned by GTA: Vice City. It set a new bar for blockbuster status in video gaming.

And that's why it's the greatest game of all time to me.

I remember the good old days of playing SMB3 with my friends in their basements, just drinking juiceboxes. I still do that nowadays. I love the game so much.

Such a hard question.
Hmmmmmm..........
Greatest game of all time to ME is a tie. Resident evil ps1 and castlevania sotn ps1. Bloodborne ps4 and Mario sunshine GameCube hanging out behind the first two mentioned. Those games are perfect to me tank controls and all.
Probably greatest and most influential in general would be super Mario on the good Ole nes. For its time it had perfect game play, level design, wacky but cool characters and great music. 100% perfect and still very enjoyable and will be 100 years from now. I could think about this for hours upon hours but I gotta get back to work.

My Favourite game is The Wind Waker but it's definitely not the most influential

I mean, it doesn't need to be overly influential, as long as it is like it is. That game was so fun, and I need to go back and play it again.

I know I had a hard time trying to think about what to put in the intro for my favorites, so I put my current most played, and some favorites. I also agree, Super Mario will be a game that will be able to be played still when I am dead and gone. I am deffinately going to introduce my kids to the game if I ever end up having any.

My favorite game personally, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn (it's somewhat influential to the franchise because of its low sales. If it didn't get only .50m then they wouldn't have worked so hard on Awakening)

However, I've gotta say Tetris was probably the most influential overall. But other games like Mario, Pokemon, Wii Sports, GTA were all very influential but in very different ways.

It all depends on your age and overall gaming experience. I would say Tetris(GB) and SMB(NES).
Special mention to Chrono Trigger and legend of Zelda: ocarina of time.

My boring, predictable Top 3:

3: Tetris - Greatest puzzle game of all time, basically spawned an entire genre.

2: Zelda: Ocarina of Time - best 3D Zelda and one of the most innovative games of the early 3D era.

1: Mario 3 - Self explanatory, plus it had its own movie. How many games can say that? E.T.? Puh-leaze!

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

For most important or influential, I'd definitely list games like Pong, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Ultima, Street Fighter II, Doom, Quake, and Super Mario 64.

For greatest, I'm going to be boring and pick The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. And, if you'll allow me, I'll just copy what I wrote for one of the greatest games events:

Ocarina of Time is a masterpiece, the pinnacle of Nintendo creativity and ingenuity, and the benchmark against which all games -- past, present, and future -- must be judged. It pioneered innovations like z-targeting, auto-jump, and context sensitive buttons. It took existing game mechanics like horseback riding, fishing, and the realistic passage of time and wove them into the game narrative like never before. Truly, Ocarina has everything: a sweeping musical score for the ages; vast, fully-realized three-dimensional worlds; innovative and easy-to-use controls; an epic and emotionally engaging storyline; and gameplay so rich, varied, and engaging that it has no equal.

Great thread :)

As a somewhat of a Zelda fan myself (but mostly on handhelds) I always wanted to love OoT but I could never get into it back in the days. I am tempted to buy the remake on the 3DS and give it another shot. Does that version hold up, or should I just rather play it on an emulator or maybe hook up an old N64?

And being on topic: how the hell did I forget SF2? That game was like an earthquake back in the days. Took everyone by surprise after the mediocre SF. Though I always liked Tekken the most and my friends were huge MK fans, this is where the brawler boom began.

I'd recommend the 3DS version, if only for the frame rate improvements. It achieves a nice 30 fps, which is a solid improvement over the original's 20 (!) fps. Plus it has the mirrored version from the Master Quest and a "boss challenge" mode. And it's now easier/cheaper to find, since it was named a "Nintendo Select."

Totally agree about SFII. Has there even been such a gigantic jump in quality between a game and its sequel? My brother and I played hundreds of hours together on SNES, between SFII, Turbo, and SSFII. He still beats me to this day :)
