Forums - Sony - What is so bad about keeping all your games and peripherals, just to upgrade the box (PS4 to PS4.5)?

Because in reality it rewards no one.

Because in reality developers will always develop in the most affordable way possible - for the lowest common demoninator, which means either the PS4 or the PS4.5 do no get the attention they actually deserve without driving up development costs, and you cant possibly expect developers to spend more money when there is little to no chance that extra effort will lead to more sales. Developers will also suddenly have to program online play to account for the hardware differences. Which means 99% if ganes will probably not take advantage of the additional performance for anything other than things like load times.

Because in reality it means that everyone that bought a PS4 expecting developers to give that console their best efforts for the next 5-7 years suddenly cannot count on that any more.

This simply is not true. The increased development costs and "lack of focus" or "lack of effort" due to having to make games in two PS4 versions are totally insignificant.

Where did you get the idea that online play in particular would require any special consideration just because there were two PS4s?

Already the extra resources needed to port between Xbox and PS4 in this gen are very minor, they are that small (<5% of dev costs). Because the two machines are quite similar. And obviously a PS4 and PS4K would be extremely similar. The extra effort needed to make two PS4 versions wouldn't be even 1%.

How do you know this? Seriously. Where are you getting this '<5% of dev costs'? What knowledge or experience are you drawing from when you say this extra work would only add another "1%" of dev costs?

Try playing Super Nintendo eshop games on a regular 3DS and see what happens.

Oh sorry, now you got me. A wii port (that is cheaper on wiiu) and like 5 old snes games, not a single new game for the system but hey, now the regular 3ds is completely obsolete, what a dicks! Now I have to resign myself to play the other 99.99% of the games while I keep complaining about the 0.01% of old games that I cant play.

Meanwhile there is a bunch of people that have been complaining about N3DS not having exclusives. Confusing times to be a gamer.

The fact remains that Nintendo has dicked over regular 3DS owners and are obviously favoring new 3DS owners. There's no technical reason why SNES games can't run on the 3DS, and the act is completely indefensible.

With the current PS4, Sony cannot do this to current PS4 owners. It is not something they have to worry about. With the introduction of a PS4.5, they certainly do have to worry about missing out on games and features from that point forward. It's a legitmate concern.

At least you're honest. :)

Um..  Yes. It does.  PC games can run at HIGHER resoltions on more capabale PC's and lower on those that cant.. Its been happening decades my friend. This would be NO different. Its not about just DOWNGRADING.. Its about having the better assets available for the PS4.5 and not on the PS4..

You're acting as if I don't make console video games for a living. I know exactly how it works. I have personally done the work myself. For example I worked on porting a PS3 game to the PSVita, and much of the work was about optimizing the game to run on much less capable hardware, and reducing the complexity of practically everything, from AI to audio to 3D models to animation to make the game run.

I totally get the process. PC games are made differently. Their engines are different, games are optimized differently. It's like oranges and grapefruits. They look pretty similar on the outside, but once you get inside you're looking at a familiar but also very different experience.

I'm confused on if this is what you do for a living why you would make the comparison from porting a game PS3 to PSVita with what would happen here.. Because its NOT THE SAME THING AT ALL..   First of all.. the commonly used "Game Engines" are NOT different.. lol.  Unity, Cry Engine, Frostbite, Source and Unreal ALL SUPPORT PC, PS4 and X1..  Second.. AS I SAID..   The PS4.5 versions would simply download or contain on the disc the assests for the new resolution and be better optimized for the FPS.  This is NOT porting.. Both are running the SAME EXACT OS..     Most of the games are "throttled" down or downgraded graphic wise after intially developing them on DEV KITS..  on the PS4.5 they would optimize it to run on the newer hardware, no different then they will with the old.  Again. its NOT porting when working on the same exact OS.. Its just optimizing for the specific hardware.. JUST LIKE IT IS ON PC.

Your post would make sense if console video games, and console video game engines were developed the same way and operate the same way as they do on PCs. This simply is not the case.

Nah fuck that, if I want to buy a Slim I'd buy a slim, but I don't want to buy a new console every 2/3 years.

If the PS4.5 exists and is just smoother UI and 4k output for video, then whatever. But anything more then I'd be pissed.

You do realize that that this new model could only be released in the hollyday season 2017 at the earlierst. This would make it 4 years which is actually a normal console circle, almost

Which is another reason why it's asinine and not happening. The  It makes no sense for sony to make a upgraded PS4. They don't need to dabble with any hardware except to make a slim and for the PS5. The PS4 is selling really well and they're making a lot of money off of it. A PS4.5 is a waste of resources and it's redundant.

Sony release slims in the 3rd year of the consoles life.

Also 4 years is not a console cycle, I know Nintendo may be doing it, but Sony's done 6 years, 6 years, 8 years, they shouldn't do 4 years.
