Forums - Gaming - Has "the gap" gotten smaller?

I have both a PS4 and an XBO and, in the past, it was a no brainer which version of multi-plats to buy. Recently, the decision hasn't been as simple.

The PS4 version of games always had a resolution/fps advantage. A funny thing happened when I was deciding to buy Hitman for one of my consoles: The Xbox version had some minor  performance advantages (better framerate in certain areas--worse framerate in others). I'm considering buying The Division, today. Again, there are only minor differences.  There was a time when it was always 1080p v 900p on technically demanding games.

At one time, I thought the gap between consoles would only widen (some saying the PS4 is 50% more powerful) but it seems the Xbox One is managing to keep up with the PS4 in terms of technically demanding multi-plats. Your thoughts?

,*no actual research went into this OP. Just an observation based on recent gaming purchases.

"The version on microsofts box generally runs 5-10 frames pr secound slower on avg than the final game on the playstation 4." - DigitalFoundry

XB1 has drops down to the really low 20s (which DigitalFoundry claims doesnt happen on the playstation 4 version).

The slowest running area in the game "paris" supposedly also runs best on the playstation 4.

"Has "the gap" gotten smaller?"

Answear: Maybe but its still there and appernt enough to point out.

*edit:

hmm watched the video fully.... apparently inside crowded rooms the Xbox One runs slightly better (2-3 frames pr sec) O_o

Its a area where the fps is generally over 30, so if you just frame cap it, its not something you notice.

Yeah. When PS4 is better, it's MUCH better and when Xbox was better, it was slightly better--but I didn't expect it to be better at all! Truth be told, the only reason I got the Xbox version was that my PS4 HDD was totally full (I'm ordering a 2TB HDD on Amazon today, though). I just assumed that as developers got better with the PS4, they'd push it even further.

What are those minor advantages? PS4 version of Hitman has superior framerate.

I'll edit the OP.

Overall the game still plays better on the Playstation.

But yeah its not by much in this game, I think part of it has to be how much the developers bothers fine tuneing it to work on each system. Maybe they just put in more work on the xbox one version.

It's for a huge part optimisation, but if the gap has shrunk due to optimalisation of Xone drivers, API, acces to a new core etc. will ultimately been proven by the likes of Gears 4 compared to Uncharted 4 etc.

Lazy third parties can always opt to make the PS4 identical to the Xone which means less optimalisation efforts. Or just making the resolution higher, which is also 5 minutes work. What I am saying is the power gap between Xone and PS4 should be interpreted as the gap between the best available on each console and not the willingness of a third party for optimalisation.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

I think with time that gap has to get smaller, just as it did with Gen 7 machines.

Developers find easier ways to get better results with more time.

Gen 7 was way diferent. The ps3 was much more powerfull but harder to develop. AS developers got better they managed to close the gap. But first party games where always miles ahead of anything on 360. This time devs just dont care and will develop for the lowest denominator so we will never see much diference from now on on third partys, but again, first party games will be way better for the mst powerfull console.

It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.

'some say'? It's fact that the gpu is 50% faster on the ps4. But obviously you're only really going to see the difference in exclusives just like last gen.

Since the gen began baring some exceptions ps4 had resolution and frame rate advantage, if its the same resolution then it's usually just frame rate advantage if resolution and framerate are the same its usually a visual advantage.

Most of the differences are minor anyway
