Forums - PC - mac vs. pc

@TotalWar23:
let me put it in simple terms. You are saying a custom built gaming rig is better then Apples gaming rig, when Apple does not sell a computer for gaming. yea, they have some token games, but have you ever heard Apple advertise it's computers for gaming? No. They want you to buy them for all the other crap. For all that other stuff, Apples rock. I have a PC for gaming. I have a Mac for everything else.

So of course it's not fit for the task. It was never meant to be.

Oh, and I only put 2 gig because you never buy ram from Apple. it's way overpriced. Ram is Ram. It's the same Ram you would put in any PC, so there is no price break on either side after the first 2Gig (the min you can get that Mac with)

@BenKenobi88
Just an FYI. All Macs have at least Dual cores. (there top ones have 8)

As for your overpriced comment about there general purpose Mac. The closest they make, that anyone would want to game on, is the 24" IMac. It's $1,800.

If you put all that together from NewEgg, it would come to $1,610. That's a home built, do it yourself. Putting it all together, and only saving $190 (and it's still missing stuff, like built in Bluetooth, and firewire 800 ports), is not coming in "Much Less". Forget the elegance of the Mac case and simplicity of hookup. It's not to be overlooked. I would never have a desktop in my kitchen, but a iMac I might (I used a MacBook in the kitchen, so no desktop at all).

Anyway, for gaming, there is no better choice then Windows on a home built PC running XP or Vista (I like Vista). I am not arguing that. I am just arguing against putting what Apple has to offer against custom built gaming rigs, when Apple doesn't even try to compete in that market.

 Apple RAM overpriced? That doesn't tell you anything?

Secondly, I only used gaming rigs as an example because you used it as an example. My point clearly remains-buy any PC computer for general computing and it'll be a lot cheaper than your Mac counterpart. Actually, in my last post, nowhere was gaming even mentioned. Is that simple enough?

Also, from Newegg, lets see the components you bought there for the PC and compare it to the $1800 Mac you mentioned.

 Funny I can build almost the same machine and cost me around 1200 (Only lacks of FireWire)... and with a X1950 PRO (Much better than the 2600) and 2GB of RAM...

I don't see any reason for me to ever own a mac. I use XP for games, and an OS superior to OSX for everything else *points to sig*...AND I have control over what hardware I have in my computer, at least with my desktop.

My laptop also runs linux/xp, but it has a discreet video card that is passable (8400M gs) for games like TF2, etc. If I wanted discreet graphics on a mac laptop...I'd be spending around $2000, minimum. Guess how much I spent on my laptop? $650. You might argue that my 1.4ghz C2D in my lappy is nowhere near as fast as the proc in the macbook pro, but you can find laptops with similar specs for around $500 less than the macs.

The whole argument that I keep hearing from people of mac hardware being superior or somehow 'different' than PC hardware is totally bunk. They use the same kind of hardware everyone else uses, only they charge more for it. One could argue that OSX is superior to windows (and it is in some ways), but why not go all the way and use linux instead?

 What did you use for:

An OS? I used Vista Ultimate. Not as good as OSX, but as close as I could get :p

A web cam?

A wireless 802.11n card?

Bluetooth? (No built in, but at least a USB)

A mic (yea, 8 bucks, but still :p)

Did you make sure an add a dual layer DVD burner?

Did you use an aluminum case?

Did you add speakers?

None of these things are a lot, but when you add everything that's in the iMac, it adds up.

There's your problem right there

 Desktops generally don't have/need wireless cards, by the way.  To me that would be an unnecessary and unwanted feature.

Vista Ultimate haha.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I agree with you there, but unfortunately windows is still needed if you play some more recent games..
