I don't see an advantage if you've got the goods. Disney doesn't make games that hard core gamers care about and EA has become Satan. Nintendo pulled out at the time, imo, because they couldn't compete and wanted to save face. I'm hoping the new president has a change of mind and decides to take Sony and Microsoft head on again.
Whatever works for you. Just know their E3 directs do exactly the same as their live presentations (but without the problems of a live event).
It's been on cards for over a decade now, E3 as it is now is also down scaled from what it used to be in the early 00s, the event just costs too much money for everyone involved and has little significance in how things pan out in the market. Many are also realizing that the stage show part of it is more irrelevant to the content as seen when the 2014 E3 ND beat out the other shows, that was a wake up call as a pre-recorded event that cost a fraction of what it costs to be at E3 had more praise.
Let go back to 2008, Nintendo's worst E3, they sold more that year regardless than any other year that gen, it showed that E3 was nothing more than a passing day dream and not relevant to the market movements itself. Developers and Publishers are realizing that so are opting for the same approach of less involvement with E3.
E3's days as it is now are numbered especially with the progression of the internet and streaming, don't be surprised if all platfrom holders in future gens are using the same approach.
You're not thinking about this clearly. Instead of live presentations, they can show puppets or executives playing with toys. Perhaps even hard-hitting segements about how games are inspired by trees or cats.
THIS is what I call ahead of the curve:
I get that you're being sarcastic, but you're defeating your own point. That video makes that content far more tolerable to consume than it would have been during a live conference. They would have talked about that collaboration live either way and it would have been absolutely unbearable live. This might not have content that is interesting to you, but this actually has pacing and is edited to have good flow, with any of the awkward beats cut out. Gameplay weaves in and out of the clip as they color it with the context and circumstance from wence the crossover came in a seemless and natural way. Both speakers are seated comfortably in a clean, bright, appropriately firnished environment and the whole atmosphere within the room is that of ease. Because of this, none of it sounds like marketing. They aren't talking deliberately towards a crowd of people trying to convince them of a passion for Nintendo while reading deliberately from a teleprompter, taking awkward beats, and waiting for applause.
This is the absolute most efficient way to have presented this content, and the reception wasn't even negative for this part of the direct. Like I truly don't see what you think is wrong with this that has anything to do with the format by which it was presented. It's literally evidence of the opposite of what you seem to be implying.

I'm starting to feel this too. Its unfortunate that E3 is being scaled down, but the Internet has changed everything and is continuing to evolve, thus, the way content is being presented is changing as well. We're seeing live streams of demos, presentations, interviews, etc. We don't necessarily need to go to the actual venue to watch anymore. I couldn't imagine how you could have gotten the latest content and news from E3 years ago the way you can nowadays.
Nintendo doesn't know how to do a good live conference anymore. The few I went to were so underwhelming. I still remember how they ended their show with fireworks....in Nintendoland.

There's no way they're going to NOT do a live event when it comes to unveiling new hardware. So, regardless of everyones opinons on them, Nintendo's going to have one no matter what.

I don't see the relation between my words and yours.
