Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft to unify PC and Xbox One platforms, ending fixed console hardware

It does sound a lot like Microsoft wants to kill Steam - and they are willing to kill Xbox for that in the process.

Only time will tell.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

This will definitely be a struggle for them in the long term. It's true that people pay for incremental upgrades for phones and what not, but I don't see that happening with console hardware. Parents are going to have no idea what hardware is better than the other, and then they'll tell their kids tough luck when they come back in a year for another.

So it begs the question: will games be made for the Xbox One-3 that the Xbox One can't play? It'll segment the market significantly. The problem also arises that they're releasing more and more titles on PC. So at that point it makes more sense to invest into a PC. It'll still be cheaper in the long run and will offer more utility.

As much as we all hate how console tech lags behind as time progresses; I don't see the average consumer upgrading Xbox's every 2 years for new upgrades. This news convinces me even more than an Xbox is simply not worth a purchase this generation, and instead I should focus on PC and pick up what I can when they release it on the Win10 store or Steam.

People would just buy a pc and just upgrade the parts as they go versus having to buy a console that's gotten a slight upgrade every year or so. Also, tablets and smartphones will never replace dedicated home consoles. The specs of those are all over the place. i doubt any dev would want to develope a serious AAA game for a phone or a tablet.

Some people seem to want consoles to die but it won't happen because they still sell good. That's the simple truth.  People thought this same sort of nonsense when steamboxes came out.

ITs about giving people choice. Not everyone has the money to buy an expensive PC to run them MS exclusive games and even more People just dont want a PC at all never mind with dealing with upgrading them. Most people just want a console they can plug in turn on and play. If they want a more powerful version they can trade their old one in or sell it and upgrade to the latest version.

You can bet once Ms does this Sony will follow if they dont already have plans to do so (Imo i think they do already).

And Specs of mobile phones might be all over the place right now but its only a matter of time before the Baseline install base of phones thats more powerful becomes bigger then the console user base.

I mean just look at the jumps mobile phones have made in the last 5 years now imagine where they will be in another 5. Fact is the 6 year console cycle is now outdated since they started using standard PC parts.

At some point, the phones will stall in specs because of price. Most people don't even bother with gaming PCs because of their price. What makes you think people will make pay even more money on a phone with specs that can play current AAA games? Do you know how expensive that would probably be?

MS is only messing around with this because sony forced them into it and MS is trying to find a way to beat 'em in the gaming market or/and just add a lot more value to windows 10. Why would sony follow suit on something that's failed in the past (steam box)? Because MS is doing it? No.

Funny how people here and anywhere are praising Microsoft for thinking about doing that. The same people bashed Sony when they made similar comments

No one is forcing you to buy anything, just like if I have a iPhone 6, there's no gun to my head to have to buy the newer iPhone. I can upgrade when I want as a consumer.

It's only in consoles that we're sold this crock that less choice for the consumer is some how good. With this model I can upgrade on MY terms, not when a corporation tells me I should.

MS is wisely changing the rules of the game. Steambox is not the same thing because Microsoft can subsidize the cost of the XBoxes they sell, meaning they can sell them for a far lower price than STEAM ever could.

All this means is soon Microsoft will have the most powerful console on the market with the best graphics and performance for third party games, not the PS4. They also may now have access to tons of PC content/legacy games too be unifying, and broader developer support in general. There will be no point in making PC-only games anymore, might as well make it work on the XBox at least.

Uhhh...I mean...Maybe this is just because I work retail, but people already complain that they feel like they have to buy new consoles too often. The general buying public is going to reject this.

What? We just came from the longest gen... Ever. Most have yet to even buy a new console.  Maybe you misheard?
