Forums - Microsoft - Phil Spencer Signals Xbox One Hardware Upgrades

Xbox Two.... just like Xbox One... just better hardware.

I guess this means hardware backwards/forwards compatablity, and MS supporting 2 gameing markets at once (two, and one).
My guess? same games and the biggest differnce will be the Xbox One games will drop in resolution, and the Two, will play them at higher ones.

I think your right but it will do this through buying digitally on Windows 10, the game knowing what platform it's being run on and scaling accordingly. It doesn't sound like upgradable Xbox's, but a better version of PSNow that has the entire library of games not just a specific generation.

This is very bad news. Get ready for the same magnitude of bugs as recent PC ports, never-ending patches, lockout of new features to older hardware and all the rest.

And games will still be held back by the lowest compatible hardware, because devs won't want to waste budget on the <5% of people that bought this year's Xbox.

Could be like this

Xbox Level 1 - Current XBox spec, redesigned with modular/upgradable design.

Xbox Level 2 - $100 upgrade, bumps the system in hardware power by double (2.4 TFLOP) making it more powerful than a PS4. 1080P + 60 fps becomes kinda standard, great for VR.

Xbox Level 3 - $250 more but allows games to run in 2K/4K resolution with effects that would blow away a regular X1/PS4. For really hardcore gamers.

Upgrades are subsidized by MS so they're basically sold at cost, so they're not pricey like PC GPU upgrades which are sold at a large mark up.

Individual upgrading to the metal like being able to swap RAM and stuff isn't possible, you pick one of the above configs, this gives developers a better idea of a fixed three set of hardware to work on.

I think the next Xbox is just gonna have more powerful specs with the same arcitecture allowing for BC.

In fact, that would actually make cross gen releases simple as well.

Uggh, my favorite thing about consoles was the assurance that my purchase practically guaranteed six or seven years where devs would try to push the console as hard as they could. This sounds more like the Ipad or Iphone practice, where apps continue to work on your older models, but aren't optimized particularly well. I don't want to continually upgrade my hardware in order for my games to run well.

I hear ya, but as long as all games play well on original X1 models then its fine.

I hope the remodeled X1 is a more powerful console. That way a better looking/performing console games isnt as far off.

Well look at the iPhone. Many games are compatible with both 5 and 6 but you get a performance boost with the newer model. It could be that simple with a upgraded X1.

If it gives X1 a significant graphics/perfomance edge on PS4, its worth doing.

Nintendo was sort of doing this more than 20 years ago via FX chips and N64 expansion paks. The difference of course, is that Nintendo sold one machine and used other means to pull off the upgrades giving consumers the feeling of a uniform platform.

Microsoft has lost it's way, totally. It's no longer interested in "console gaming" imo. Their hopes of changing the way the industry does business is probably a sham intended to distract everyone from their shift back to PC.

Lets say they make a Xbox One Plus, that ends up being 40% faster than the orignal XB1, and thus equal or slightly better than a PS4.

That would make you go out and buy a new Xbox One (plus) ?

or you guys think a solution like this is more likely:

Some new thingy magiggdy you plug into some weird slot on the xbox one, you just never really understood why was there in the first place?

The problem with 32x is it only supported specific games and it was an expensive accessory.

Do a search of Sega Neptune. That should have been released as the a new model Sega Genesis.

If MS makes a more powerful X1, all games should work on old and new specs. But new specs would look/perform better. Specs at par with PS4 wouldnt be good enough.

But if games designed for newer specs also work on older specs, then your argument doesen't hold water. That has to be a focus for atleast three or four years or there will be a lot of criticism.

Nintendo's New 3DS has games that work on old specs but better on new specs. However, some games are for New 3DS specs only. Funny you ignored that. :-p
