Something new would have to make things more convenient for consumers, but there's nothing more convenient for communication over a distance than transmitted speech, so phones will remain the #1 choice. Considering that smartphones are PCs in people's pockets, it's hard to imagine that something new could be a breakout success. Anything of value is pretty much covered already.
