Forums - Movies & TV - J.J. Abrams: "I'd Welcome Gay Characters In STAR WARS"

Oh criminey. Now looking at the comments I sort of get it.

For those who are complaining that people are being pressured into adding characters in Star Wars... well yes I actually see your point. Abrams didn't go out of his way to say he wanted his next movie to have a gay characters, he was put on the spot with a question about it. This I understand. Creative vision and the like should be preserved. My personal take, as I previously said, is as long as the story is good, it doesnt matter what kind of character they choose to put in.

However the rest of the comments here complaining about a gay character actually make no sense. You're complaining that sexuality has nothing to do with Star Wars. Are you kidding? How many of you legitimately watched Star Wars? The main story line centers around the fact that Anakin betrayed the Jedi and had had two children who thwarted him and the empire. Let's not forget the fact that the Jedi were a monastic group, as in, things like marriage were prohibited. Something that became a major plot point for the series and the character development for Anakin because he and Padme had to keep their marriage a secret, behind closed doors. This was very much to Anakin's disdain who voiced his opinion to his wife that he wanted it to be well known, a factor that helped drive and nurture Anakin's disdain for the Jedi Order? Am I wrong so far? Is this untrue? No? Excellent. Moving on. Han Solo and Princess Leia had huge relationship situations that was very much a factor in Star Wars. If you can say that Han Solo and Leia were not pining for each other in any single Star Wars episode they were both in, you are out of your minds. Sincerely. Their relationship is iconic. I won't even go into the comics because to be fair, those are no no longer canon. Their feelings were clear. You don't go through Star Wars episodes and then be magically be surprised that in the Force Awakens they are in a relationship. Because magic does not exist. Neither does the fairy tale world you think exists where in Star Wars everyone is non-sexual and has a bunch of characters where no one is expressing their love to anyone.

"-_- Really? That's just two good friends hugging it out. No confliction or ongoing plot point there..."

" 'as friends!' Way to show the full gif..."

"Nah that's just... two friends... hugging each other... with their lips... nothing outwardly sexual... yeah..."

We all knew. Stop lying to yourselves.

"N-Nice try! They were just saying I love you like a brother or sister..."

...

...

...

Indeed.

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense. Sexuality was in SW since the Original Trilogy, and failing to see that is just unbelievable. It's like they don't pay attention to the movies or something xDDDDD. It was a big important plot point on the prequels, and it was important to develop the relationship between Leia-Solo-Luke.

There's a difference between a couple kissing and having loads of fake sex on camera. It's not a love story or similar to something like Game of Thrones or Sparticus.

Sexuality is not all about sex. The portrayal of a man-woman relationship is a sexuality matter too. Or man-man. Or woman-woman.

But those relationships were important to the story in Star Wars versus creating a token character to pander or as a political statement. Alot of what happens in Game of Thrones is essential to the story and character development. A good bit of it is for sex appeal, though. I'm completely fine with more gay characters being in that kind of show. It's also very normal for that show.  I also like that show btw. Sexuality in and of itself doesn't fit what Star Wars is.

Sexuality is a part of Star Wars. Sex not so much.

I'd be fine with a character that happens to be gay. Just no gay character for for the sake of it.

Like Lando happened to be a black guy. It didn't feel like 'oh we have to cater to that audience.'

Isn't the Star Wars universe already too diverse to even distinguish this kind of relationship? With these many races it should be a no brainer that homosexuality exists in some shape or form without having to point it out.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

That's why you can have a character that just happens to be gay, but you shouldn't have a token gay. It could even be a small scene. Thing is, it happens or it doesn't, i actually don't care for myself.

I am not really sure how one tells the difference here.

Being gay more of a sidenote if you want so. I mean Lando is Lando. He's a personality, while some films seem to 'need' some afro american, often very cliche like, Lando is someone whose skin happens to be darker, if you understand what i mean.
