Oh criminey. Now looking at the comments I sort of get it.
For those who are complaining that people are being pressured into adding characters in Star Wars... well yes I actually see your point. Abrams didn't go out of his way to say he wanted his next movie to have a gay characters, he was put on the spot with a question about it. This I understand. Creative vision and the like should be preserved. My personal take, as I previously said, is as long as the story is good, it doesnt matter what kind of character they choose to put in.
However the rest of the comments here complaining about a gay character actually make no sense. You're complaining that sexuality has nothing to do with Star Wars. Are you kidding? How many of you legitimately watched Star Wars? The main story line centers around the fact that Anakin betrayed the Jedi and had had two children who thwarted him and the empire. Let's not forget the fact that the Jedi were a monastic group, as in, things like marriage were prohibited. Something that became a major plot point for the series and the character development for Anakin because he and Padme had to keep their marriage a secret, behind closed doors. This was very much to Anakin's disdain who voiced his opinion to his wife that he wanted it to be well known, a factor that helped drive and nurture Anakin's disdain for the Jedi Order? Am I wrong so far? Is this untrue? No? Excellent. Moving on. Han Solo and Princess Leia had huge relationship situations that was very much a factor in Star Wars. If you can say that Han Solo and Leia were not pining for each other in any single Star Wars episode they were both in, you are out of your minds. Sincerely. Their relationship is iconic. I won't even go into the comics because to be fair, those are no no longer canon. Their feelings were clear. You don't go through Star Wars episodes and then be magically be surprised that in the Force Awakens they are in a relationship. Because magic does not exist. Neither does the fairy tale world you think exists where in Star Wars everyone is non-sexual and has a bunch of characters where no one is expressing their love to anyone.

"-_- Really? That's just two good friends hugging it out. No confliction or ongoing plot point there..."

" 'as friends!' Way to show the full gif..."

"Nah that's just... two friends... hugging each other... with their lips... nothing outwardly sexual... yeah..."

We all knew. Stop lying to yourselves.
"N-Nice try! They were just saying I love you like a brother or sister..."

...

Indeed.
