You cannot compare the Chinese boxoffice from back to the current one. This past week, China just had the biggest boxoffice grossing a week ever - more that during the week of TFA's release in the US+Canada.

Titanic stayed in theatres because people kept going to watch it - do you think it would have still been playing if no one was going? The movie made $28M in its 8th week-end compared to TFA's $6M. Titanic just had amazing legs.

Well the main reason it had good legs is because 1998 wasn't exactly a stellar year for movies so it really didn't have much competition.

This doesn't make sense. You're saying that it grossed $2B is because there was nothing else to see? So people went to see it over and over again because there was nothing else to see? The same can be said of TFA.

I think you actually need to look up the movies that where released in 1998 again besides Saving Private Ryan there really wasn't much qualiy wise and that movie wasn't direct competion to Titanic since it was a R rated war movie.  The same can't be said for TFA since Deadpool and Kung Fu Panda 3 are already miles better then any movie that were released in early 1998.  The late 90s was still a time when all the shitty movies where released during the first quater of the year.  Plus TFA had went up against much better movies even earlier since the Revenant and The Hateful Eight where released around the same time as TFA.

Titanic did have amazing legs that said, Titanic came out at a time when people watched movies on blurry VHS tapes and the average home TV was a 4:3 ratio 25 inches in crappy SD resolution, there was no Netflix or easy download of pirated movies online.

Today most homes have a large theatrical LCD/plasma screens of 40-50 inches, high definition, way more things to watch and do and the movie ticket issue cuts both ways ... yes tickets are more expensive today, but that also keeps a lot people away from the theater today (why pay $12 a ticket for a movie when you have a big screen at home).

Titanic would not have made that kind of money with the competitive issues TFA has to deal with, people would've seen it 1-2 times, not 3-4 times like a lot of people did.

It also had a run where a lot of crap was coming out. Once it was clear of the Bond movie in late 1997, it was pretty much clear sailing (no pun intended) for a long period of time.

And what competitive issues did TFA face?

And so what if most homes have big TVs? Do the movies get released on the same day in Netflix? Same week or month? More like a year late.

There's also 55% more theatres now.

The average ticket costs 84% more.

The US population has grown by 17%. Ditto for the Canadian population.

I think you need to look up movies in general back then - not many movies made more than $500M back then.

Don't bring up Deadpool or KFP3 as competition. By the time they were released, TFA was already ending its end - it made $10M this week worldwide. On top of that KFP3 basically flopped.

TFA had stronger competetion, The Revenant (odds on winner for Best Picture this year), Kung-Fu Panda 3, and Deadpool.

Once it was clear of Tomorrow Never Dies early in its run I guess Titanic had ... The Wedding Singer (a low budget film) to compete against?

Higher ticket prices as I mentioned are both a pro and con ... people aren't going to pay $12 to watch the same movie 3-4 times today, it just doesn't happen.

TFA has beaten Titanic's initial run, the 3D re-release DID give it a boost from China, so Titanic's current number does have a big boost from China, TFA will beat Titanic once it gets its (inevitable) re-release like Titanic got.

Yes there more people today, but there are also like 5000 more entertainment options today too and the quality of watching movies at home and being able to access pirated copies with 4 or 5 clicks is exponentially higher. Fewer people go to the movie theater today (that's just a fact) than in 1997/98, so increased population does not help TFA.

Wow I think you need to look up Kung Fu Panda 3's numbers again it didn't flop.  Also you need to know its still has a lot of markets where it hasn't been released yet it will add a lot more next month and its not until the 13th of April when it will be released in all markets around the world.  Its production budget was $145 and so far it made $262 so it already made more then enough not to be considered a flop.  Also TFA is not even close to ending its end it will be in theaters in North America for at least another 60 days.
