5 years is not frequent
The Xbox was replaced 4 years after it was out, the PS2 6 years. Beyond that I'm pretty sure sony and Microsoft next systems will see much of their software shared with X1/PS4 for the first few years. An extention of what we saw during 2014.
Consoles will become increasingly like PC, its inevitable. Whats important is that consumers buy a box they can plug into their TV and don't have to worry about specs.

PS2 launched in 2000, the PS3 in 2006/2007... so 6 to 6.7 years (depending on the region), not 5 years.

Whoops, that was gamecube that was 5 years.
2018 is possible but unlikely. Maybe 2019 just to beat Sony at a console launch.

If they make a new console they will reveal in 2018 and it will release in 2019

There's people who only buy a console to play multiplat games with their friends. I wouldn't call them dumb just because they don't buy Gears or Halo..well unless their friends play PS4. There is other reasons to buy X1 than just those two games, even console exclusivity is a thing since not everyone wants to play on PC. Majority of console owners are casuals who buy only few games a year, so a huge amount of exclusives isn't necessarily a deciding factor when choosing a console. |
Yeah I would argue the biggest reason for picking a certain console is actually what your friends play on (not always the case, but it tends to be true more often than not).
Ironically, I rarely play the exclusive games on the Xbox One, even though I have a good few of them. Instead, I've been playing Destiny like crazy since that's what most of my friends like to play.

I Think that they are losing a lot with Hardware, they are nearly giving the consoles for free, and Because Xone, is shipping Multiple times less than Playstation 4, so is more expensive to produce. |
BS. at worst they are breaking even with hardware, but more likely profitable. The XOne sales while not at ps4 levels are still excellent and cheaper to produce than the ps4. 2019 is a far more likely scenario.
